Maytag Ensignia 3.3 cu. ft. Top Load Washer Logo
Anonymous Posted on Oct 04, 2011

I have a Maytag Ensignia MAV6457AWW washing machine that has a noise in the lower end of the agitator (which sounds like the transmission area) It is a rattling sound like something has broken. It is affecting the performance of the washer, where as it seems like that in the spin cycle the clothes are not fully wringed out. The noise is there in the wash & spin cycle. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you for your time..."

In this case it seems that the main bearings on the shaft is a suspect. However if you have noticed that machine is vibrating when it is running then the motor /drum suspension has to be inspected. Since these fittings are located on the underside of the machine it is important that you look for the noise with a good inspection lamp. Manually turn the motor and drum and listen for the noise, if so the motor bearings, the drum agitator shaft and fittings must be checked. Also the suspensions which include the shock absorbers and springs, the body clamps must be checked to be in correct alignment and not changed in position. Tightening of the mounting is also very important. Finally in most cases a drop of OIL or smear of grease on the moving parts cane solve most issues.
For replacement of bearings check for tips on this visual link: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/washing-machines/a/7/1401/how-to-replace-the-bearings-on-a-washing-mach.html

Maytag clothes washer, Ensignia, Oversize Capacity Plus Model: MAV6457AWW, Serial #: 25127403EX stopped agitating and spinning!

Yes, they don't make them like they used to and it is definitely worth fixing. Black dust is almost certainly the belt. Pull the machine out and tip it backwards against the wall. Have someone hold it steady and look underneath with a flashlight.

Worn bearings make a noise.

Parts 30 on drawing 1 is your belt. $39 Canadian. It is a long belt! Make sure the pulleys are okay and the motor and gearbox turn freely.

Washer wont agitate, pops breaker

Could be the gears/transmission for the agitate cycle are jammed, the motor then freezers, creates an overload and the breaker pops.

My Maytag Ensignia washer is not spinning well. It bangs side to side with even the smallest loads. It seems like something is loose. Is this something I can fix myself or do I need a repair mans help....

Try leveling the washer... If the washer is level, then don't wrap the clothes around the agitator...drop the clothes straight in, on top of each other evenly around the agitator. The Ensignia washer has a Dual action agitator... That means the clothes roll over them selves, instead of moving side to side, as with a traditional agitator. wrapping the clothes around the agitator will cause the load to be un balanced and then cause the "banging" noise... this should take care of the problem...

A screeching sound during agitation cycle only.

sounds like a bad clutch. check the transmission out for ware and inspect the clutch as well. make sure the brake is not dragging as well.

Spin cycle not working properly

On the transmission there are two shift arms. One shift arm controls the agitator and the other shifts to spin the cloths. If the washer has been making a "clicking" sound when it trys to spin, the solenoid that shifts the spin shift arm is not catching and the drum will not spin. The other possibility is the spin clutch is slipping and make a "grinding/ratcheting" sound. Neither, unfortunately are inexpensive to fix.
If you can describe the sound and when it occurs, I might be able to get closer.
Let me know.

My wife wants the agitator removed so that we can clean it.

Pull off the top cup, then use a socket wrench to remove the bolt to separate the agitator.

Maytag Ensignia Smoking

I had the same exact problem, called a repairman to take a look..he informed me the motor has burnt out! His first thought was the transmission, and said having the motor burnt out is better since it is less expensive.
