Pull out the removable table and you will see the drop down feed dogs switch lever behind the back of the machine. Move that lever to the left or right to have feed dogs go back to normal sewing mode OR for embroidery mode.

That is the procedure, however the lever just moves and doesn't do anything

My machine has a "darn" setting that drops the feed dogs. Does yours?

Remove extension table/accessory box by gentle pulling it away from machine. You are left with just the free arm. In the back of the free arm, lower left corner, you will fine the feed dog lever. Push the leaver to the right to lower the feed dog.Instructions for lowering and raising the feed dog are on page 48 of your owner's manual. Good luck!

How to lower the feed dogs for free motion sewing on model # 16782

There are most likely some numbers missing from the model number you provided. Usually, there is a 3-digit beginning number, ie 115, 385, 401...

I am unable to find model information based on your number, but you can most likely get a user's manual through Sears or try searching the internet (Make Model manual), ie:

Kenmore Sewing Machine Manuals Instruction and Repair Manuals

Sewing machines generally have two ways to disable feed dogs. One way is a lever or knob on the machine itself that physically "drops" the feed dogs so they are below the needleplate. The feed dogs will continue to operate but since they are below the sewing surface, they will not have an effect on the fabric movement. The other way is an accessory that attaches to the needleplate which covers the feed dogs and creates a flat sewing surface.

Another item that is important for free motion quilting is a darning foot or free motion foot. These presser feet are physically shorter in height than a standard presser foot. This means the darning foot, when lowered, does not apply "pressure" to the fabric when it is lowered. It, instead, provides leeway between the presser foot and the fabric so there is room to manually maneuver the fabric while stitching.

You'll just need to CONFIRM that the presser foot shank is correct for your machine (low shank, high shank, slant shank).

There are probably a multitude of designs available for your machine, either Kenmore or generic brands. Once you've determined your machine's shank, it would be a personal decision as to the design you'd prefer, which could be metal or plastic, closed, open, or clear see-thru as well as various shapes, round, oval, etc. There are also some feet that are spring-loaded so they "hop" while you stitch, or feet that are solid.

These are examples of different darning/free motion presser feet.

How can i keep the feed dogs from dropping when I sew?

Need more info. What kind of Bernina are you using? Feed dogs normally go up and down when sewing to move the fabric forward. Is that what you mean? Or have you lowered the feed dogs to do free motion quilting or darning and now they stay down?

I have a Kenmore 158.13500 sewing machine with no feed dog cover and i can't find one how can i free motion with the feed dogs in the way

Set the stitch length to 0. Find a thin piece of plastic and punch a smooth hole in it for the needle. Tape the plastic over the feed dogs and you're good to go.

Can you drop the feed dogs on kenmore 385.1233280 or do you have to remove them to do free motion quilting?

Do you have your manual? Normally, there will be a lever next to your bobbin area to lower your feed dogs if you have a vertical bobbin. If, it is a horizontal bobbin it will usually have a cover to put over the feed dogs. If you are in doubt, take your machine and go to your local Sears sewing machine department, usually your salemen are very helpful and give great advice for free.

What steps do I need to take to do free motion stitching on my Kenmore 19233

Hi. You'll need to lower the feed dogs and use a darning foot. Use a straight stitch and set the stitch length to 0. Depending on what thread you use, you may need to adjust the tension. Keep the fabric taut (or use a hoop) and experiment on scraps to get the results you want.

Machine model 19233

On my machine I find that my bottom and top free motion stitches are more uniform when I set my needle thread tension at 8 or 9. This is inaddition to what you are already doing. Also, you might want to use a top stitch needle.

Good luck,
