Try running the mower with the gas cap loose or removed and see if it runs longer. When it goes to die, does it spit and sputter or does it just die? Also, please look on the side of the engine for the engine model number. I need that number and not the mower model number.
Regards,Richard
Removed the gas cap altogether, same result.
When it dies, it just dies. Like you turned the switch off.
The model is 31p777-0299-e1.
Do you have a engine model number?
31p777-0299-e1 is the engine
Often when a coil is going bad it will work fine when it's cool, but when it gets hot it will stop working. As soon as this happens, check for spark by removing the spark plug from the engine, putting the coil wire back on it and placing the plug in contact with the metal block. In a shaded or darkened area you should see a nice blue spark. Be careful, the engine will be hot at this time so wear protective gloves and do not to touch the plug or wire while doing this.
Post back the results.
I think Melanie is on a good track also, did you try her solution John.

Check the electronic fuel devise on the bottom of the carburetor if equipped. it could be closing. I filed the tip off. you can check it by going to b & S website FAQ.
Sometimes when this happens, the ignition coil is going out. You can find it tracing back the spark plug wire, you will find it next to the flywheel. When you replace it you can use a business card as a feeler gage to get the proper gap of approximately 0.010" between the ignition coil and the flywheel. I hope this is helpful for you.
If you have fuel and spark then check for a loose ground wire from the ignition switch. Check all ground connections on the engine. It can also be a clogged fuel filter, or weak fuel pump if you are loosing fuel. Can be a weak coil if you are loosing spark. You have to determine which one you are missing when it stops.
Its hard to determine but you might have fuel starvation issues maybe gas cap clogged or in need of fuel filter. Try these and see what happens. Good Luck...
New fuel filter. Removed gas cap altogether and same result.
Are you sure of clean fuel no water in tank? Did you try a carb cleaning there also might be some junk floating in your float bowl, prior to fuel filter change. Pay close attention to float boat screw, if there because there are small orifices on that screw that clog easily and if already contaminated don't take much to stop flow periodically. Good Luck...
Doubt that this is it. Cleaned the carb and installed a carb kit. May have to revisit it if no other suggestions come.
