When my Canon MP530 prints color, instead of solid color, i get horizontal color bars

The printhead needs to be cleaned. Remove the cartridges and printhead. Soak the printhead in warm (not boiling) distilled water overnight to desolve the dried ink. Dab off the moisture with a soft lintfree cloth. Allow the printhead to airdry for a few hours (you can blowdry the printhead on thel low setting). Reinstall the printhead and cartridges. You may have to repeat this a couple of times if the printheads are very clogged.
Let me know if you have any more questions or problems. Thanks.

The black color does not print even though I've done the test

The following may work: remove all the ink supplies. Remove the printhead and soak it for about 5 minutes in 0.5" of very hot water. Gently blot the printhead on a soft damp paper towel to remove the excess water, then replace in the printer and then reinstall the ink supplies.

I need a new print head

Check if the service station proper covers the black nozzles when the printhead is parked. Sometimes the mechanics change its position and the printhead dries out.
Try to unclog the nozzles with very hot water. Sometimes it helps. The new printhead is very expensive and you may want to buy a new printer instead.
Remove the printhed, put it in a bowl with the nozzles down and fill with boiled water until the nozzles are covered. Wait 15 min and dry the electric contacts with a dry napkin. Good luck!

The unit will not power up. I've double checked the plug but I cannot get it to turn on. It's about 3 years old.

That's common on the Canon of that age. The printhead goes bad preventing the printer from turning on. If the carriage is not locked on the right, you remove the inks and the printhead and try to power on. If it comes on you need a new printhead and if you put the old one back in you can ruin the logic board.

Wont power on

In the shop we would take out the printhead and see if it powers up. If it does, the printhead is bad. If it's stuck on the right the only way to remove is to take apart the printer.

Chip/no chip issue for Canon Pixma MP530

the printer NEEDS ink cartridge WITH the chip
BUT, you can move the chip from the old to the new cartridge, you just lose the ability to monitor ink level....you have to visually check it from time to time
been doing it for months now... works fine, just keep a close eye on the ink when it starts to get low, can hose the printhead for that color if empty
printheads run around $55 or so - so actually, savings in ink will easily pay for a new printhead every now and then, if you screw up  :)
