Always receiving fax

You will need to select manual under the RX settings. Under fax settings. Rx means receive, Tx means transmit. The fax settings are under additional functios * on keyboard. Or you can put a switch in the phone line. When you tell it manual you will have to be there to receive a fax. In the fax settings there are several options on how and when you receive a fax. Ring settings forward settings things like this can customize your fax. You can set how many rings before it answers. Leave it on auto and set more rings so it won't answer until that many rings. Default is 2 or 3 rings. Give it 5 that will give you time to answer and you can still get faxes when your not there. Play around with it and figure out what works for you.

Fax is not answer ...

If the "Mode" was "Tx" or "Snd", you tried to send a fax, and the other fax machine did not answer, then it was either turned off, or out of paper or ink. If the mode was "Rx" or "Rcv", it means your fax machine tried to receive a fax, but none was sent. If your machine was in TEL/FAX or FAX mode and it received a regular call, the caller heard the fax tone and hung up. If your machine was in ANS/FAX or EXT.TAM mode, it most likely means a regular voice caller heard the answering machine and hung up without leaving a message.

How to get my s405 to receive a fax

You might want to check the User's Guide for your printer. To access it, on your computer, click on Start > All Programs > Lexmark > Pro200 Series > User's Guide. Go to page 62 to know how to setup your printer to fax.

If your fax is already setup - meaning you're already able to send faxes but not able to receive. Make sure that the Auto Answer is on. To check that, on the control panel of your printer, press on Setup > Fax Setup > Auto Answer.

If you have an answering machine, make sure that your fax will pick up 3 rings higher that your answering machine. If you answering machine picks up on the 5th ring, set your fax to pick up on the 8th ring. You can change that under fax setup.

If you have a voice mail service enabled in your phone, you'll need a distinctive ring feature for your fax to work if it's being shared on the same line.

When I try to send a fax I must dial 5 then number, do I have to put the area code if it's the same? and it says dialing then no answer. Does this mean it is actually trying to send the fax? (military)

It never hurts to use the area code in some places it is necessary.
No answer either means you are dialing a number that isn't a fax or the fax you are dialing is not set up to auto answer.

Try a fax you know is working.

Can I use as phone/answering machine and fax

no, this machine does not have a message center. the only way is to hook an actual answering machine up to the "ext" jack on your fax. set fax to answer on 1-2 rings, and set your answering machine to answer on at least 4 rings, and set your fax receive mode to "tad" which means telephone answering device.

Auto answer not working

First, unplug the power cord for 10 seconds to reset the fax.

If that doesn't work, you will have to scroll through the menus and set to AUTO or AUTO RECEIVE.

You should be GREEN for AUTO. RED means MANUAL MODE

HP 640 Fax...can't recieve faxes

You cannot use a four wire cable to connect the fax to the wall. You must use a two wire cable, like the one that came with the machine.  BTW, that means you can't you the EXT port to connect a two line phone or answering machine.

Trying to fax

lilman1,
it means you may have dialed the wrong number.
The fax machine your calling did not pick up. You can test the above by. Using your home phone or cell phone & call the fax number your trying to connect with. You'll know if it is a fax machine by the tone you hear.

What does "TAD" mean when it appears on the screen?

TAD is Telephone Answering Device. TAD mode is the only mode that can be used with an external telephone answering device (unless you are using a distinctive ring number for receiving faxes). Your telephone answering device must be connected to the jack on the fax machine (labeled "EXT" for USA). When someone dials your telephone/fax number (to send a fax or to speak to you), all the telephones (including the FAX) will ring according to the number of rings you set on the TAD. The Ring Delay setting is not recognized in the TAD mode. If you do not answer the call, the TAD will answer. As your outgoing message is playing, the Fax is in the background, silently listening for fax tones. If the FAX hears fax tones, it will automatically go into the receive mode. If the FAX does not hear fax tones, it remains silent, allowing the caller to leave a message. The above information is correct for a Brother fax machine. Is your fax automatically picking up the call or do you have to push a panel button to start the receive fax process? Perhaps the fax is already "in" your fax machine's memory and only needs a manual printout. Check the fax call log.
