If your computer has Windows XP or later your computer should automatically install generic drivers for it so that it works. So if that's the case and it still doesn't work then try changing the battery in the mouse, or plug the wireless adapter for the mouse in a different USB port.
What does the device manager say about the hardware?
It could be loss of the usb device controller. Windows XP is old and that is an indication that the hardware is old too.
You haven't said what kind of mouse you have or whether it used to work. I'll offer some suggestions for the most common problems: If it used to work but now doesn't, try a system restore back to when it did work. If that doesn't work--are you using a wireless mouse? If so, are the batteries fresh and are they inserted correctly? If you are using a wireless mouse, have you pushed the little "connect" button on the bottom? You haven't said, but is the other mouse a wireless one or a USB mouse? If your USB mouse doesn't work, try another USB port. If you go into the device manager, do you see a "human interface device" or a "mouse" listed? If so, it will tell you the system recognizes the device. If that is missing, there is a good chance the mouse is dead.
So much for Wal-Mart tech support. If your mouse is not working, first check the batteries to be sure they are good. You wireless mouse has a USB "antenna" or sending unit. It may have a button on it that says "connect." If so, push it. The mouse itself has a little button on the bottom that says "connect." Push that one next. It should now work. If it doesn't, switch USB ports and try again. And no, we don't charge for this answer.
It sounds like the Drivers for the Mouse aren't be installed. Since it is a wireless mouse and receiver it will need separate drivers to function properly. If it came with a CD I would try re-installing any software that came on the disc. If not (I'm assuming its a Logitech Mouse here) I would visit the Logitech website (www.logitech.com) and see if you can locate Drivers there.
I've got one of those. We had problems with it chewing batteries up. You might try another mouse on that computer, and try that mouse on another computer.
