The recoil will not pull. The machine was running and cut off. Tried to pull start it and the coil would not move. Was able to manually turn the fly wheel slightly. Tried to pull lit again and would not budge. The spring is is great condition this machine has never been out in the rain or snow. Brought it to a repaircenter how ever they claim they have to order special tools . To go beyond the recoil spring to check. HELP been getting the run around for over 2 weeks. Its a Briggs and Stratton engine 8.50

Check the float in the carb. bowl for gumming and clean your carb.. If you haven't done so already. Or you can try running a fuel treatment through your fuel. That may help you with your flooding issues. Good luck.

SOURCE: Briggs & Stratton Quattro lawn mower

A lot of time when the small motors on these push mowers surge it is a governing spring that is weak or broke. It does not hold enough tension and causes the valve to fluctuate. I have fixed this many time for a relatively cheap amount (under $5).

SOURCE: 4.5 hp Briggs& Stratton push mower will not run

You need to rebuild your carb. The diaphram in the carb has gotten hard and is no longer acting as a fuel pump to pump the fuel to the carb. Get a rebuild kit and a compressor (for compressed air) to blow out the jet passages. It is an medium to easy job, just watch the small parts. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hint: Before you remove your fuel/air jets, bottom them out first and count the number of turns it takes to bottom them out and mark it down for each fuel/air jet. When you go to reinstall the fuel/air jets bottom them out and then back them back out to the number of turns before removal. That way the fuel/air jets are set to the right number of turns when it was running right. Good Luck, I hope this helped Please rate me...Thanks

Anon, it sounds like you need to get your Mantis serviced. If you cant pull the recoil rope it sounds like the coil is overheating and obstructing the fly wheel.

Pull rope will not pull

Remove recoil rope assembly. Ensure rope is properly wrapped around. While recoil assembly is removed use ratchet and socket to rotate fly wheel, remove spark plug first, observe compression and exhaust at spark plug whole during rotation of fly wheel. Clean or replace spark plug. Ensure oil is full. 30w. Set spark plug gap. Always use Stabile in gas. Replace coil rope is required. Purchased by the foot at any mower repair store.

If you think the rope pulls too easily the engine may not have enough compression. Consider doing a compression test or a leak-down test on the cylinder.

Broken recoil start on tecumseh 6.5 hp

broken cord? remove bolts holding recoil housing.lift housing straight up,you may have to wiggle it a bit.turn housing over, remove any cord thats left, note how & where it connects to the spool.wind the spool [and consquently the spring under it]in the direction the cord would turn it as pulled when starting.hold spool tight.thread new cord through hole in housing.let spool turn back just enough to attach new cord.hold cord & housing, let spring "re-coil" cord slowly.check for smooth operation.replace housing.you may need to pull cord slightly to align 'square' shaft w/hole in spool.only after you are satisfied with the operation of it adjust length of cord by pushing excess cord through the handle, tie a new knot, then cut off excess,if any.
