Well I have an Onyyo TS SV515 Pro II receiver that is quite a few years old. I have lived in several houses and have moved it with me. For as long as I can remember it has been going into 'protect mode' when I turned it over 6 on the volume knob. I have a subwoofer and 4 infinite speakers and a yamaha center channel speaker.
I got on the internet the today to see if I could figure out why it did this. One person suggested cutting my speaker wires and resplicing it making sure no hanging wires where there.
I had been using the same speaker wire since I puchased it (10 yrs ago). I feel pretty stupid, cause I just did the wires to my front 2 Infinite speakers and WaLa...It works flawlessly. I can now turn up my receiver...after 10 years of dealing with no 'full' volume.
*****Check those speaker connection, they are the key*****

I have an integra receiver that keeps going into protect when I turn the volume up, or when a loud part in a movie comes up.
My receiver keeps going into the protect mode after it has played a while and i have the volume up almost midway
mine too....it happened last night and won't come out. I unplugged it all day today and tried it tonight....still in protect mode. Now it's just a paper weight!
