I have a Nikon Coolpix 7900 camera I purchased used. It came without the proper USB cord, so I purchased one separately. When I attached the camera to the USB port of my computer (and I've tried this on 3 computers), I get a "Power Surge on Hub Port" message, advising me to remove the device. The cable is fine; the computer and its USB ports work successfully with my other, non-Nikon, camera. It seems the problem lies with the camera unit itself. But I have no idea what to do about it. Use a card reader to download your pictures to a folder you create on your desktop.

Unfortunately the Nikon Coolpix 7900 does not have a 'display' button to take care of this. So you need to go through Menu to access Setup menu. Here you will get option to customize the display.

That is the only Nikon software that supports Vista since your camera is "outdated".

PTP (models supporting the PTP protocol) and Mass storage USB transfer options can be used for camera connection. However, the camera's transfer button can not be used to transfer pictures over a PTP connection. Set the USB transfer option to Mass storage to enable the camera's transfer button.
  Currently, the new Nikon Transfer and View NX will replace Picture Project as our new Image Transfer and Browser applications. These applications support the same Nikon products as Picture Project.

sd hc cards are not supported by 7900, you will never can use such a 4gb card with this camera
