I have a Canon Powershot A2000 IS, and the flash is not working. It constantly says charging flash, then change batteries. The light indicator goes on but the flash won't respond. If I turn the flash off, the camera takes the photo without a hitch.

You most likely have dirty contacts or a loose connection inside the camera. It might be worthwhile trying to clean the contacts. I would suggest using cotton wool twisted onto a skewer or wooden toothpick. Do NOT use any solvents or other liquids. If that doesn't help then you should seek professional advice ina camera shop.
Probably factory defective sensor. Canon had a recall about that a few years ago. Affected other brands too. Canon repaired my Powershot A95 free of charge when that happened, even though warranty had expired.
Hi,
For the best results, I recommend you to use Canon rechargeable (NiMH) batteries. Rechargeable batteries provide the best performance and are the most economical choice. Else...... AA alkaline batteries such as those from Energizer or Duracell will provide the best performance for non-rechargeable batteries.
I have the same problem. Worked for 3 years and now the battery charges to green but goes dead immediately. I've changed batteries. Its the camera not the batteries. Works fine plugged in. Obviously the cameras are not charging the batteries. Canon must know but I cannot find a fix and warranty is over. I guess buying the expensive camera of the day isnt always assuring you of quality.
Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to a advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:
