My Dell Latitude 2100 netbook (small computer) was running slowly, then appeared to freeze. It would not shut off, so I was told to disconnect the power and battery. I did, and now, when I turned it on, the computer is just a dark screen. Every so often, it sounds like it's "sighing", but nothing is working. HELP! At the top of the keyboard, the volume controls (three) are all lit up) as is something that looks like a lock (with a 9 inside) and of course, the power button. Can you help?

SOURCE: Volume buttons and mute/unmute buttons don't work

First open the Control Panel -> Keyboard Layout. Look for the dropdown list for different keyboard models. Scroll to the Dell models and try e.g. the Dell Mulimedia USB Keyboard layout. Stop the GUI with Ctl+Alt+Return, login again and maybe your multimedia buttons will work now.
and for more info contact http://tinyurl.com/m7ghqz
If there is no keyboard layout that fits your needs, you may download the programs keytouch and keytouch editor, which are very helpful creating your own layout.

Hi Chad,

It sounds like it could be 1 of 2 issues either the memory or your hard drive may be failing.

Please do the following:

Turn on the computer. When the DELL logo appears, press immediately. If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer and try again.

When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press .

Please choose the express test and post the results.

Dust is the enemy of a notebook/netbook/laptop computer, because it acts as a layer of insulation, preventing proper cooling.

Turn the computer off.
Disconnect the AC power.
Remove the battery.
Buy a can of compressed-air, and give your computer a "blow-job" through every intake/exhaust vent, to remove the dust.

Dell latitude D600 problem

The flashing caps lock is an indication of a failed POWER on Self-Test (POST)

Remove the HDD, Battery, AC adapter, RAM and Modem

Press and hold power button for 15 seconds

Connect AC, see if you get any beep codes. If you do, power off, disconnect power, insert RAM, connect AC and reboot. If system boots, power off and add hard drive. If it doesn't, replace the motherboard.

If the system boots with RAM, but fails to boot with HDD, replace HDD 1st.
