Maybe the flash is stuck, try pulling it out. sure if it is smokes coz flash delivers heat when it's fire.

SOURCE: Nikon D40 will not flash

The lightning bolt icon in viewfinder blinks when flash is not ready, this can happen if flash doesnt pop up all the way, or if flash strobe tube is bad.

SOURCE: nikon d40 flash won't fire

My d40 did the same thing and the guy at Wolf Camera said a sensor is bad. The falsh was up but every time I focused it tried to pop up the flash again but it would not fire.

I had 2 options. Send it off for 8 weeks to Nikon at a $240 minimum or buy a flash attachment for $100. I chose the $100 option.

SOURCE: My Nikon D40 flash won't pop up, but still

I'm having a similar problem in that the flash won't pop up. I believe the smoke comes from the flash heat (very hot) melting a bit of the plastic around it, but I could be wrong.

The biult in flash does not open,it's just the small one that is working

If you are shooting in any other mode that full auto (the green symbol on the wheel) your flash probably wont pop up on it's own? If your in manual mode you need to push the little flash button yourself to pop it up. And one mode on the dial is no flash mode where the flash won't pop up at all.

Built-in flash does not work even in a MASP mode

This often depends on the shooting mode you are using. It is often on a selection wheel. Say you are in Fireworks mode the flash will not fire. If you get out of a special mode back into normal camera I am pretty sure your flash will not be greyed out.

I'm trying to take pictures without the flash but

You can shoot at faster shutter speeds if you raise the ISO setting. Also, turning up the lights will help.

My Nikon D40 flash won't pop up, but still flashes? And it smokes. What do I do? How much will it cost to get repaired?

These pics are not the greatest quality, taken with my iPhone, but once you take your flash cover off it will be pretty obvious what 2 U brackets are under the L bracket (that hooks around the mount). Make sure the two U shaped brackets are LEVEL with each other, mine had 1 tucked down & as soon as I used a small screw driver & pulled it out to make it even, I pushed the flash down, hit my button to pop the flash up & it released. Please remember!!! When the cover is off & you engage the flash there is a chance that the flash bulb will shift up & can potentially fall out. I would put the black flash cover back on before you engage your flash to keep this from happening, otherwise you could get a jolt from the electrical system trying to put your flash bulb back in (speaking from experience). Good luck!9_18_2011_11_42_43_pm.jpg9_18_2011_11_43_30_pm.jpg

Auto flash wont work

did it pop up automatically or did you pop it manually? if it popped up by itself then the flash unfortunately is probably dead, since on automatic, it won't pop unless it's going to fire. If you popped it manually then - the camera doesn't think that the flash is necessary for the conditions that you're shooting in.

I can't seem to turn the flash on my Nikon D70 on! I've been playing around with it for hours and have read through the manual. I've followed the steps clearly, but nothing is working. The previous...

If nothing else it should pop up when you put the camera in A or M or S and then press the flash button on the side. It might or might not fire, depending on the light available, but it should for certain pop up. When you do this, you should hear a click and the flash should pop up. If you hear the click and it doesn't pop up, then it's jammed or glued or somehow being mechanically prevented from coming up.

In Auto modes, you can select the flash to off with the side button and the back rotary selector. This is where the flash symbol with the slash through it tells you the flash is off. If you push the flash button in Auto modes with the flash selected off, it won't pop up.

There are also some things the D70 can do to control external flash units that may be set abnormally.

The best way to make sure those aren't messing you up is to select "reset to default". That will take the camera back to a base setup that should work.

If none of these things gets it going, take it in to the Nikon dealer in town.

IN THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL USING THE FLASH IN SHOOTING FAST CAUSES IT TO HEAT UP .

TRY USING THE FLASH IN MANUAL AND CUT THE RATIO POWER AND USE AS A FILL AND NOT A MAIN .

D70s the flas will not stay closed waht should i try

The flash pops up automatically when half-pressing the trigger in Auto mode.

If you mean it can't be closed by hand, you need to send it to service.
