When the lens moves in an out it is TRYING to focus. In some conditions the auto focus gets confused. Move your field of few and press the shutter button down half way to lock in focus. Then move it back (to original view) and finish taking the photo (pressing down the rest of the way).

SOURCE: Problem with the Nikkor AF-S DX 55-200 zoom lens.

I just had the same exact problem! However, in my case I was finishing up a photo shoot at work, went to switch lenses, and when I picked up my 55-200mm zoom lens, the tip of it fell off!! I was able to put it back into the end of the lens, but now I am having the same autofocus problem and sound effect. I think it is because it is off track inside the lens. But I have only had mine for 5 months! I'm preparing to send it to Nikon for warrenty repair.

SOURCE: Nikon DX AF- S Nikkor 18-55 mm lens won't Auto focus

Is the switch on the side of the lens set to manual or auto? Sometimes it's the little things like this that we don't notice.

Where is the timer button on the Nikon D5000?

It's not one button.

If shooting information is not displayed in the monitor, press the [info] button. Press the [i] button to place the cursor in the information display. Use left/right on the multiselector to highlight the current release mode in the information display (the fifth item from the top along the right edge) and press OK. Select the self-timer (the one-handed clock symbol) and press OK. Custom Settings #C3 controls the length of the the timer delay.

Don't forget to change it back when you're done.

If you use the self-timer a lot, you can program the Fn button on the front of the camera to set the self-timer.

Would like to know how to use the self timer on my Nikon D60?

Highlight Release mode in the Quick settings display and select the self-timer mode (an icon that looks sort of like a one-handed clock). Frame the photo. Press the shutter release button halfway to focus, then all the way to start the timer.

It's all in the manual under "Self-Timer and Remote Control Modes," page 55 in my copy of the manual.
