You can probably recover the files using file recovery software like RECUVA which you can download and use for free as seen in the following links:
http://www.piriform.com/recuva
http://download.cnet.com/Recuva/3000-2242_4-10753287.html?tag=mncol;1
Just use your mouse to click on the links, which are the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information and items at the website indicated.
At the CNET free download page you can read about the software, check out other user's reviews, and download it to your computer for free if you want.
It is probably best to do this procedure as soon as possible. Do not record any more videos using that device and don't add or move around any data on it or some of the files may be overwritten and lost forever. Just keep the device turned off until you can remove the hard drive and access a computer to perform the procedure, or else have someone else do it for you like a technician at a computer shop.
When you connect and scan the drive using RECUVA, there should be a little circle beside each of the file names that it finds.
If the circles are GREEN, then you should be able to just tick the small selection box beside them on the left hand hand side and then click on the RECOVER button.
If the circles beside the file names are RED, then they may be just too corrupted to recover.
Here is a link to a website with some screen shots of the recovery process to help you out:

If you need a program to convert file formats then you may want to try a free program called VLC MEDIA PLAYER which you can download from WWW.CNET.COM
Here is the direct link to their download page where you can read about the software, check out other user's reviews, and download it free if you want:
http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html?tag=main;productListing
Just click on the DOWNLOAD NOW (19.42 MB) button that you see on the left hand side of the page if you want to download it, then follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the program. Be sure to click on the yellow security bar at top of the page if necessary to ALLOW DOWNLOAD.
Please comment back here to this page if you have any details to add, have any questions, have difficulty accessing the links, or just require further general assistance and I will respond as soon as I see it.
I hope that was helpful to you, good luck and take care.

Hi,
There are only a couple of options. Either you could swap the your DVR hard disk into a desktop PC (in good condition) as a second hard disk, and access it that way to (see if it is possible still to) recover the valuable files off of it or you have to look for a data recovery service which could be expensive at times. Unfortunately, there is no software that could help you to retrieve those.
I wish i could have a better solution.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
Thanks for your response!!
Once you would be able to save the data, there are many conversion software's available in the market. Most of them could be download with a certain fee. However, it all depends upon the format in which the files are saved.
For example - If the data is saved in .fly and you have window's media player which could read .avi. You could google .fly to .avi conversion and a long list of software's would be there. I would be able to tell you few software's, however try to save the data and get back to me with the format on which the data would be saved.
Thanks and Regrads

Dear Sirs
Thanks for your reply. I can insall the HDD on a PC and it should be possible to read it.
However, you do not mention if the HDD, once installed on a Windows PC, will show up the files in some standard format, VOB, MPEG, DivX, etc.
Bloggers have indicated that the format is propriatary to Panasonic and hence even if you can read the files off the HDD, they won't be usable.
That is why I wondered if a software app is available to do that.
Thanks
Akram

Dear Taran
Sorry, but as Panasonic experts, I was hoping you would tell me what format the files are in before I go to the trouble of setting up the HDD, etc.
Moreover, my current research (as I mentioned) shows most bloggers saying that the format is proprietary and not convertible.
So really, it boils down to one question: What is the format Panasonic uses? I have not found an answer yet.
Thanks again
Akram
Now you're talking. Thanks very much. I will try RECUVA and see what happens.
All the best
Akram
