I have a brand new Nikon D3100. The battery was fully charged and placed in the camera. I took about 4 photos, and then turned the camera off. When I turned it back on the battery wasn't working to power the camera up. I then opened the battery backing, took it out, put it back in and turned the camera on. It worked. I checked to see how full the battery was in the menu screen - it was fully charged. Turned the camera off and on again, same problem. The camera only operates if I take the battery out and put it back in again.

Andisheax22 don't you just love it when people think that it is always the user's fault who appears to be the *****?

I am the original poster of the above message. I don't know why FixYa took 7 months to reply, but I eventually returned the camera to the dealer after writing to Nikon directly.

Nikon admitted that there is an issue with the battery of this particular make of Nikon camera. As a result, I was given a new camera and have had no issues since. It is a great camera once it works!

I suggest you do the same.

Hope it works out for you.

    Regards
    Kathryn

No, it wasn't; on two accounts. First of all, your reply is 7 months late, and secondly don't automatically assume that the fault lies with the user. Telling a photographer to charge a battery for a new camera is like asking a computer engineer if his computer is turned on when it has fried itself. It's just as insulting.

Perhaps if you did some research on the subject you would have seen from the various threads that there is an issue with the Nikon camera itself. That was why I was given a replacement within days of writing to Nikon.

    Regards
    Kathryn

The solution to your problem is simple, Kathrynbax.

The battery never comes in fully charged. It's always charged only so you may be able to check if your camera is working. I suggest, you take out your battery and put it to charge for exactly 90 minutes as the manual says. Then I'm sure you won't face any such problems.

Hope this solves your problem.

Good day!

I've had the same exact problem. I have 2 batteries and both were fully charged. I'm not an idiot, I know how to charge a battery. If the camera turns on, if I let it "idle" it won't turn back on. I have to turn the camera off, take the battery out and put it back in and that only works half the time. Sometimes I press the battery in the chamber and hold it myself. It's like the battery isn't being pressed against the inside hard enough.

I've tried to explain this to Nikon and they told me to get a new battery and charger but I know it's not my battery. My camera has never been damaged and has always been placed in my Nikon bag when not in use.

I'm at a loss of what to do. I've invested too much money into this camera to just let it be wasteful.

My Nikon D3100 will not turn on. Is there something wrong with the batteries/memory card? Or rather the camera body itself?

It could be either the battery or the camera.

If you have a second battery, try it. If it works with the second battery then the first battery is bad.

If you don't have a second battery, take your camera and battery to a good photo store. They should have a second battery to try. You might be able to test your battery with one of theirs. This will tell you whether the battery or the camera is bad.

How can i turn on my Nikon D3100?

Is the battery fully charged. What were you doing on it right before you shut it down. Also make sure your putting the battery i. The right way

Also you can\'t charge the battery by usb into a computer. You need to use the external wall charger.

Unfortunatly the d3100 does not contain am external reset button like the Nikon D3000 but this might help. Take out the sd card and battery and leave it out for a couple hours then, after a couple hours have past reinsert the Battery without the SD card. If it still doesn\'t work shine a flashlight into the battery holder to see if any of the metal connectors are bent.

The only logical explanation after that if it still doesn\'t work is that the battery died doesn\'t have to look damaged it can crap out anytime. I would try getting a new battery and putting it in. If you just got the camera you could tell the place you got it at and they should give you a new battery.

i hope I could help, your going to have to trial and error this one to see what gets it to work.

I have had my D3100 for about 2 years and love it. In the past 2 weeks it won't power up. I thought the battery had gone bad so I bought another. It powered up and I took a few pics but then 2 minutes...

are you using Lithium batteries?

cameras are WEIRD!!!! I have watched brand new, regular size personal camera eat regular batteries in just a couple pictures, then work fine with lithium batteries. Also..cheap batteries are just getting cheaper, so as it may of worked fine 2 years ago, could just be not so good batteries. If your not using lithium batteries, id try that first, will run you 10 bucks for 4 AA's, but thats better than the flat rate fee a shop would charge you to look at it first.

Nikon d3100 bran new battery wont finish charging !!

You have one of a few problems. Either your new battery is defective, which does occasionally happen, or there is a problem with your battery charger. The other possibility is that your camera has a problem; possibly a short circuit that is draining the battery. If you have a spare battery and it will take a charge, your new battery is probably bad.

Can someone help me on my nikon D3100 freeze problem?

New battery that is fully charged. My Nikon D3100 has had the problem of freezing every ten or so pics since it was a couple of months old. Still does it today after six months of use. I take a few hundred pics with it when shooting but only shoot once or maybe twice a month.

Have to take the battery out, put it back in etc. each time. Sometimes it allows me to power off and then back on but either way it's a pain in the rear and a serious "time waster".

My nikon D3100 got wet from rain...what will i do?

Remove the battery imediately, the memory card and the lens. Place the camera body, lens and memory card in a warm dry and place for several days to dry out completely.
When the camers is dry, insert the battery, lens and memory card, turn on the camers and set the date and time.
If the camers does not work charge the battery and try again.
If it still does not work then you need to send it to the Nikon service centre for repair.

I just got my Nikon D3100 and it wont turn on..why?? i didnt buy a memory card yet..doest it need memory card to turn on??

The battery ships in an uncharged state. Slip the battery into the charger until the it indicates it is fully charged. Install into the camera. The camera should power up without an SD/SDHC/SDXC type memory card installed - and should flash [-E-] in the viewfinder alerting you to the fact that no memory card is inserted.

This could very well be a camera another consumer tried, found the problem and returned the camera. They resold it to you. Run, don't walk and return it.
