Hello,
Their is 2 possible things that are causing the oven to not heat.

1) the pilot burner is clogged with build up and not burning corretly...the standing pitol light is small and when the oven is turned on the pilot enlarges and heats a small bulb connected to a tube on a gas valve,if the pilot burner is clogged it will burn the small pilot but will not enlarge to heat that bulb so the gas will flow to the main burner. If that is whats happening the pilot burner needs to be replaced.

2) the pilot burner is properly heating the bulb connected to the above mentioned gas valve but that gas valve is bad and not opening once the pilot has heated the bulb..so in that case that gas valve would need to be replaced

I have a Hardwick propane stove, 4 burners and oven. The stovetop burners work fine (need a match), but now the oven does not ignite despite the pilot light working fine. I have brushed the pilot light...

Hello Patrick,

WHen you turn on the oven/broiler does the size of the polot ligh increase in size??
the way it is suppose to work is...thier a small free standing polot light and when ya turn on the oven the size of the pilot is suppose to increase and heat a little bulb that is connected to a wire that is mounted to the pilot burner and when that bulb heats up it will allow the main gas to flow into the oven(not pilot burner).

If the size of the pilot does not increase it could be caused by a clogged pilot burner. the way to determine that is TURN OFF GAS SUPPLY...disconnect gas line from pilot burner and turn on gas to unit, light that tube with it disconnected from pilot burner and turn oven on and see if size of flame drastically increases...if it does turn gas off and remove and replace pilot burner
if flame sizedoes not increase the problem is going to be the thermostat

If the pilot does increase and heats the bulb on the pilot burner the problem will be with the gas valve that, that bulb in the pilot burner accathes to is bad .

now chances of the thersostat still being available is very slim if the pilot burner is clogged and needs replaced they are still available their is 2 of them one has the mounting plate on the left and one is on the right.
here is what they look like

oldtech2332_148.jpgPart number for this one is 1898-021 notice how the mounting tab is on the right

oldtech2332_149.jpgthis one is pt# 1898-022 the tab is on the left

That when performing a quick search on google is pretty much all that still available teh thermostat (would need model number) is doubtful to find also a good chance the gas valve is also no longer available

Good luck,

When i turn on oven all i smell is gas i cleaned with a wire brush still nothing. also is the pilot light always have to be on and can you see it when oven is off

Most gas ovens that aren't electronic ignition usually have a pilot light.
Usually one in the oven area and one for each burner. (Sometimes shared between two burners.)
These pilot lights must lit at all times...otherwise it won't light up and you'll smell gas.
Usually the pilot light is in the very back of the oven and can be seen with the broiler drawer opened.

There is a small set screw located at the pilot light assembly in the oven and also at every burner.
This allows you to adjust pilot light up or down, thereby letting you set pilot light flame to a level that doesn't get blown out by a draft...or you can turn it off completely.

If you use that set screw to turn off the pilot light gas, you'd need to strike a match to light the oven or burners everytime you needed them.

Oven won't get hot

If your oven still uses a pilot light, it also probably has a thermocouple positioned in the pilot's flame path to detect whether if is safe to turn on the main burner. When the thermocouple fails, the oven thinks the pilot light is not lit and will not let gas flow to the primary burners. The part isn't costly (should be <$20 US) but replacing it may require some expensive labor.

Pilot relighting Garland Commercial range

The main burner valve is the oven valve. The pilot will be next to the burner and you either have to insert a long shiskabob stick ( lit) into the hole or lift up on the bottom of the oven (inside) and you will see the pilot.

My gas was recently shut off for repairs from the gas company, now its back on and i dont know how to get my oven or stove back on

Ok you did not mention if your oven or stive had pilot lights or igniters. Given you asked the question how too turn it back on I have to assume it does not have electronic igniters. You need to light the pilot lights. There are 2 in top that are between each of the 2 burner sets. If you can not gain access to the pilot light by lifting the top of the stove up you can use a fire starter type lighter and re-light them. Sometimes they will self light if you just use a match on the burners.
As for the oven you can gain access 2 ways to the pilot light. One is to unlatch and remove the oven lower inside panel. The pilot light will be near the burner head. Just light it. The other is to remove the broiler drawer and reach way back in there to light the pilot light.

Again if you have igniter ignition all you have to do is turn on a burner or the oven. Good Luck.

Oven pilot light is on, but burners will not light. pilot light burns larger when trying to turn burner on. Do I need a new thermostat?

The thermostat is doing it's job if the pilot gets bigger. When you turn on the thermo, it does 2 things: Makes the pilot bigger and supplies gas to the oven safety valve in the oven. The bigger pilot heats up the bulb from the valve and the stuff inside expands and turns on the main gas. The oven cycles when temo is reached by making the pilot smaller. The most common problem is that the pilot doesn't get big enough to satisfy the valve. Take out the pilot burner ***'y. (7/16" wrench for the nut). Replace the pilot burner. The part is probably a 5414S030 if the valve bulb is located parallel to the ***'y.

Maytag gas oven doesn't heat, but oven's pilot light is on.

Get the oven checked out by a professional, if you have a gas leak you can easily blow up the entire house and you with it. I think you have a faulty gas valve based on what you wrote
