On most laptops it's pretty easy to remove the hard drive. Usually there's an access door on the bottom, while some others make you remove the keyboard. Once the drive is out, the easiest thing to do is hook the drive to a USB drive adapter. Then you can simply plug into a USB port on the new computer and access the data on the drive. Here's a typical adapter from one vendor so you'll know what you're looking for.

Yes one way is to purchase or borrow a 2.5" hard drive enclosure, that has a USB2.0 connection. Meaning that you could transfer your data to your new computer like a USB flash drive.

Another way is to connect your working but damaged laptop to a VGA monitor, using the VGA out port on your laptop. It should boot up as per normal if the actual laptop still functions.
In this way you will then use a ethernet cable an connect each computer together via a network.

Assign each PC with an IP address starting with 192.168._._
Note: enter a 2 digit number in place of _
The last number position after the 3rd dot should be different on each PC.

Do this by navigating to the control panel on each PC and then double clicking Network connections. Right click on the Local Area Connection and select properties.
Now select Internet properties and click properties.

Under the general tab select Use the following IP address. Enter address. Default gateway, click it once and a default is set.
Click ok when done.

Once all setup click Start and then click RUN.
Type //192.168._._
Which is the address of the laptop, the files on the hard drive should display, however you may need to share the whole C:\ of you laptop in order to copy the files.

What an effort!

Take care!

your hard drive is most likely dead for an old laptop it will be anywhere from 100 - 300$. this is most likley beaucse a hardrive on a computer that old will usually be the first thing to fail. in my opnion you should just buy a new laptop because you are bound to have more issues in the near futre with this computer.

Find a different computer-store with a qualified technician,
rather than risking your laptop, if you don't know 'HOW' to do it CORRECTLY and SAFELY.

Since you seem to have "saved" a bundle already,
spend some of those "savings" by renting the technician's services.

Last week, a local computer-store replaced my laptop's LCD screen,
and charged me for "one hour of labour", namely $60.

The store could have supplied a brand-new LCD screen for $200,
but they had a "used" screen on-hand, for $100.

So, "$500" seems far too expensive.

I cant get it to open up/work

The drop probably jarred quite a few things in the comp The spring may have fell of the door latch, capacitors, memory chips, bios chips may have gotten loose as well. Possibly power supply has broke if it is not getting any power to unit. You could always just buy a new motherboard since you have all the other parts you need for it.. Cheaper than buying another whole unit.

you'll need to pry the screen gently forward(away from the plastic casing)...along the side s of the screen will be the hinge brackets.....4 screws (2 either side) hold the screen in place...undo these screws and the screen will be free....the only thing connecting screen to computer will be the video ribbon cable which connects to the back of the screen via a plastic pressure clip...release the clip and your done.....remember to be very careful when installing the new screen as its easy to overtighten the screws and damage the screen
