The condenser or high side is built into the side walls on these modern freezers and refrigerators in many cases. It is normal for the outside walls to be hot when the unit is working. Frost on the inside of the sealed packets of food is from the moisture content of the food. Running the temperature setting to cold will accelerate the moisture freezing to the inside of the food packets. This also is a normal condition.

My 82L Upright Freezer from The Good Guys - a GVA is very hot on the outside - almost too hot to touch. Is this normal?

yes
the freezer works by taking the heat from the inside and exchanging to a coil that is under the outside of the freezer
It will be quite hot until such time as the inside temperature is brought down to the setting
the thing with freezers is that on start up the food that you are putting in should be cold to start with and not hot ( if necessary , use a bag of ice as a helper ) Later on any hot food added will not affect the operation that much as it is be in small quantities
this would be explained in the user booklet that was inside the freezer

Our Frigidaire frost frost free upright freezer from day one has frost build up on the food inside the packages. The frost is not a problem in the freezer itself, but on the food. Freezer burn occur

Hi Dale Dibb, thank you for your inquiry!

I understand that the food inside of your Frigidaire freezer is getting frost on the inside of the packages. I would recommend turning the temperature up inside of your freezer. Additionally moisture inside of the package would cause frost to develop on the inside of the food packages.

Please assure that all possible moisture has been removed out of the food packages prior to placing the items inside of the freezer. If there is anything else that I can help you with, please feel free to reconnect! -Matt

I want to make a kegerator out of this. But does anyone know where the coils are in the unit.

Plug the freezer in a let it run.
After a short while you will see frost lines inside the freezer.
There will be corresponding hot areas outside the freezer if you feel along the outside of the freezer.
The frost lines and hot areas are your coil routing.
You would tap your holes between coils.

Frosting up in the freezer and not cooling in the food compartment kenmore 363.9557852

It sounds like you have a defrost problem.

All the cooling for both sections takes place in the freezer behind the back wall. A fan back there distributes the cold air throughout the freezer and fresh food section. Every 8 - 10 hours a heater comes on for about 20 minutes to eliminate the frost from the evaporator coils back there. If this defrost cycle fails the frost will build up to a point of no air flow so the fresh food side and most of the freezer start to warm up.

The best way to take care of this is to turn it off and unload the freezer, take the shelves out and the screws holding the back panel inside the freezer out. Remove the back panel from the freezer. Use hot water and a hair dryer to unthaw the ice and frost, you will need lots of towels as the melting will bring lots of water on to the floor. Once the frost is gone you will need to install this part WR51X443. The picture below shows it. The kit contains new heaters and thermostat.

Lost vacumn, door popped open alarm on

If is the type of freezer where the shelves are also the evaporator(shelves are very cold and is normal to frost), the fact that only one shelf is iced would indicate the system is low on freon due to a leak. This would also explain the hot walls and compressor. It requires a service man to check the freon level and locate leak and recharge.

Ice builds up inside packages in freezer.

This is the moisture coming out of the food. It is what causes freezer burn.

The problem is made worse in frost free models by the defrost cylce. Best way to slow it down is to use vacuum bags or freezer bags. Also above 0 F food deterioates faster and below it gets freezer burn and the moisture problem faster.

Side of frost free freezer is very hot

the condenser coils of the freezer anre inside the case of the freezer, they are suposed to be hot they are removing the latent heat from inside the freezer to make it cold, no heat transfer no cooling, you will notice the high heat temps a lot of the time after adding food to the freezer or when you just have started it after being turned off for some reason it is fine

Outside surfaces of freezer very hot to touch

it should be warm to the touch but not so hot you cant. and also depending on how long the freezer is running and how warm it is where the freezer is will effect how hot the outside is. the reason the outside of the freezer is hot is because thats how the freezer releses its heat from the refrigerant. the longer it runs or the harder it has to work the more heat it has to hive off. so unless the freezer is not cooling there is nothing to worry about.
