SOURCE: Panasonic PV-GS31 won't FOCUS
Just a hunch as sometimes the micro will get scrambled so take off the battery as well as the battery or batterys for the date and time. and let the unit sit for 24 hours power back up as see if that cleared your error If not send away to get repaired.
SOURCE: Zoom Problem
There are two components to a camera lense. One adjusts the final lense distance from the CCD imaging chip the other adjusts the distance between the lenses in the assembly (which zooms the image in and out). It sounds like something inside the lense came loose and when you zoom the lense the focal lense is moving with the rest. The lense will probably have to be replaced if it cannot be taken apart. Odds are something is broken inside anyway. This could be something you might be capable of, I have no way of knowing. If you do not think you are up to the task, have a reputable repair shop do it. Cost should not be excessive. I would think less than $100 US plus the cost of the part. Good luck.

Try removing the battery and see if it changes back to the default settings.
SOURCE: No 1384 firewire driver for Panasonic PV-GS300 camcorder
I found the recipe. To get my DV Camcorder to work using 1384 (Firewire) on my computer I did:
1. Get a good cable. If you paid less than $20 for it, you got the wrong one.
2. Ensure that the 1384 (firewire) port is enabled on your computer. Go into the BIOS setup and check to be sure. Mine was OFF!
3. If you get an error with Windows XP not being able to find your hardware, you need to get all the drivers. There are four or five of them along with a configuration file. Miss any one and you are dead. My solution was to reinstall Windows Service Pack 3. This took a long time, but fixed the driver problems.
Good luck!
