I am tired of this mfc 440cn not printing in black only mode if the colors are empty, even one. I want to print and work with the black only cartridge. How can I get it to print in that mode only. ie: turn off colors completely. Even hitting copy in black only doesn't work. Has to be some kind of work around for this

Yes! There is a way around the problem. On each ink cartridge there is a narrow section that a sensor in the printer reads to decide when the ink is low. Cover that spot with a piece of black electrical tape to fool the sensor and you can keep printing. This page has good pictures showing what to do.

Brother MFC-440CN - print quality terrible, almost non-existent in spite of many cleaning operations.

It sounds like the printhead needs to be replaced. Brother may cover the cost of repair if you call them at 877-276-8437 and tell them the prints are "missing black ink". Very common problem that a new printhead should fix.

Hi. Can I use just black as the only colour in this machine. The cost of replacing all 4 colours is way to much. So just replacing one colour (black) would be fantastic. Cheers Ken

Black does not necessarily use only the black cartridge.

You can do a few things to save on ink expenses. First, you probably print way more than you have to. Unless you absolutely have to have a copy ... dont print it at all. Second, select draft mode for your default print mode. This will save big. Third, avoid printing color when ever you can. You can select "grayscale" for youyr 'fancy' printing.

I do not try to save $ by refilling nor do I use anything but the original equipment from the printer manufacturer.

My yellow toner is out and the printer will not print in just black

Hello,

The MFC-9440CN should be able to work even if one or more of the color cartridges are empty.

here's what you can do to print in black only.

1. Unplug the power to the MFC-9440CN
2. Clear the print queue on your computer so that there are no jobs waiting.
3. Right click on the MFC-9440CN printer icon and select "printing preferences"
4. Select "mono" as the color mode.
5. Turn the power back on for the printer.

Now when you print it will be in black only and it should work even if all 3 colored toner's are empty.

Thanks,

Pat

I have a brother MFC-490CW and replaced the black ink, and my color ink has run out. It will not let me print as it says ink is low, so it won't even let me use the black? How do I print with only using...

By design, Brother printers stop all printing when one of the cartridges is empty. This is done to avoid cleaning cycles sucking air into the system, which could possibly damage the printhead.

Even if you print in black only by changing the print settings to "Mono" or "Grayscale" to avoid printing in color, cleaning cycles would still **** air from the empty color cartridge because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles. The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge(s).

After replacing the empty color cartridge, you could print in "Mono" or "Grayscale" to make better use of just the black ink.

Will no print black color doc if any other color ink is empty

actually, its not. the reason is, there is a small resovoire (sp?) in the ink cartridges. if you continue to print, the nozzles will clog up, and can cause all the nozzles not to work. even when you do just black, the printer has to clean at times all the nozzles and if your nozzles are empty, air will go into the deep and dry up the excess ink.

if you are going to do primarily black prints, you should get a black and white laser for those uses only.

Wont print

what are you trying to print in black? the best way to test out a black ink is to open word pad and type some thing random and print it and see if that works. if you have a all in one printer u might have 2 inks one color and one black in the printer

Printing when ink is low

The machine requires all color in order to print anything, even just black and white copies. You need to install a new cyan ink before it will print.

I have a Brothers MFC 440CN . My Magenta ink cartridge is empty , how can I get the machine to print in black only ?

If you look at your printers software, there may be an option to "Print greyscale" or Print B & W Only.
