My Book files and folders disappeared

I'm currently using a Western Digital external hard drive which is 1TB. I have been running it for some weeks now and it has been fine up until now. When I plug the drive in at the moment it is recognized by windows, but not like it was before: it has lost the WD logo. Most importantly windows recognizes a certain amount of space is being used on the drive. However when the drive is opened no folders or files can be seen and cannot be accessed by the computer. Help please.

Well, it's not exactly the same, but pretty similar. I bought my Essential 500 GB two days ago. I noticed the WD logo on the file disk in "My Computer" was changed to a regular windows image today, although I took that to be an effect of when I reformatted it from Fat32 to NTSF. My major conundrum is that I connected the external hard drive to another computer (not the one I first used) and loaded it with around 18 Gb. Then I reconnected it to the first computer and the files weren't there. I'm sure they were transferred because I browsed through the folders on the other computer after it had been done, but they are not, and since I moved them they are not on the computer anymore either. I looks exactly as if the files had never been put on it. Properties doesn't indicate that there is some mysterious amount of stored data that isn't there, it's just completely gone. I lost 18 G of pictures, texts, videos and other stuff... :(

I just rebooted my computer, and upon doing so it automatically started indexing more than 50.000 files on my My Book and doing lots of other stuff while in the bios (I got the log.txt). When Vista eventually launched I found that the capacity of the My Book had been updated to show that an additional 18 Gb of data was used on the disk, but the actual 18 Gb I put on it is still not visible anywhere on it.

Actually, I've had a similar issue a few times in the past and found that the files randomly reappeared after unplugging the drive and letting it rest for a few hours. I don't know WHY certain folders appear to be empty, but it just happened again today and I'm HOPING it will resolve itself like last time.

Same thing exactly but with the 500 gb version. :(

I have the same problem and have come to the conclusion that the drive is overheating. I do not have a virus or other problem with my system. My newer (and cooler) mybook 750 works fine. I think this version of the mybook is plagued with cooling problems. I'm not even sure it has a fan in it.

I have a Western Digital MyBook2 Home edition 1 TB, and I have used it one week. I have copied pictures from he C and captured 3 hours of videos. Today all the videos are gone, but the picture folder still exist.

I have tied to find it by turning on "see system files" and hidden files and I then only found some empty folders. I have used two full days on editing the videos and all seems to have been lost.

For me, the problem has now been resolved. What I was really worried about was the 18 Gb of data that I thought I had lost. I was however able to find the containing folder by going into the "Tools" menu in the Explorer window. After selecting "Folder Options" I chose the "View" tab and marked "Show hidden files and folders" and unmarked "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)". Nothing happened at first but when I came back to my drive later I found a hidden folder with all the data I lost that had some funny extension to it. Can't remember what it was but someone I spoke to thought it could be the result of an incomplete file transfer being interrupted. So it seems my problem wasn't more severe than this. However, everytime I try to use Safely Remove Hardware to disconnect my WD 500Gb it says I can't and that I should try later. So there's my new problem: how to disconnect the drive without interrupting a (non-visible) data transfer...

Connect to your my book live firmware page. Go to settings, then media, then status. Click Rescan. It will then scan the hard drive for files. Or try rebuild if rescan doesnt work. I was able to recover all my missing files this way. All my folders and files had dissapeared and this is how I got them back.

Your WD HDD have been attacted by viruses for your computer or outside computer where you used it last. Make sure that you have an up to date antivirus software, scan your computer or the external hard drive, explore your computer, go to tools - folder options under view files & folders select show hidden files and folders apply and ok it.

You might try using a Linux distro like Linux Mint and see if it will mount the drive and
find your files. Just get a live distro with the tools to mount Microsoft file systems.

There probably is a virus on your machine. Try using a trusted antivirus to scan your machine. In the meantime, you could access your drive by following these steps:
1. Open My Computer. Take note of the drive letter that has been allocated to your Western Digital Drive e.g E.
2. Press Windows + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialogue. In the run dialogue type in your drive letter followed by a colon and and back slash e.g E:\ and press enter. This will open the root folder in your Western Digital Drive.
Hope this helps.

My 1.5 tb WD hard drive is showing as a folder on My Computer. also i have a message that the file or folder doorif.scr which refers to this folder cannot be found. Help Please!!

Call Western digital, try online chat. The size of your unit would make the item be under warranty. REcover all data from the drive and then you could reformat it. It depends on whether you use the unit's software or not...

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

Western digital external hard drive showing empty folder

Hi Elizabethfam

If not removed safely, external devices can lose information when disconnected.

I recommend using a free recovery tool called Handy Recovery which is normally used to recover files accidentally files on a PC. The application can also be used to try and recover files on your external HD.

Handy recovery: http://www.handyrecovery.com/download.shtml (look for the small button near the bottom that says 'Freeware')

Good luck!

New external Hard drive

Open up My Computer and see if there is a new hard drive listed there. It should be automatically detected by your computer, you just need to know where to find it.
