Since Vista is a very old operating system you’re going to have quite a challenge finding tools that will solve your problem
- In this particular case you may want to go to a local PC repair shop that would have the old operating system discs you’ll need to restore
- From your description it is tough to figure out whether this is a software problem or if there is something physically beginning to fail on your machine but I can tell you from experience that with the machine of that era you have a hard drives that are at least 10 years old

can you copy the disk onto a new folder on the desktop? if you can then there is no problem with the disk...you dont mention how old your computer is but if may be worth your while getting a dvd lens cleaner.does it read other disks ok? if so you might have a damaged cd and will have to look for a new disk. if the disk is not reading from your drive...ask a friend with a new computer ( clean drive lens ect ) and ask them to copy it for you.as long as it does not have a copy protection on it you will be ok, if it does you might have to ask the supplier of you e-machine for a new disk but they will prob ask for a charge
