HiMotor malfunctions usually call for service by a professional. There are three main causes of motor failure: lack of lubrication, a defective motor switch, or worn or frozen bearings. A humming sound can be related to a burned-out motor or a defective switch. Check these trouble spots before you call a professional service person or take the motor to a repair shop. Here's how to check a dryer motor:

Step 1: Remove the back access panel. Then reach behind the drum, motor pulley, and idler arm pulley. If these areas are clogged with dirt and lint, undue strain on the motor may be causing the humming noise. Worn or broken belts can also cause a humming noise. Check the belts for wear and damage. If the belts look all right, you may be able to stop the noise by spraying them with fan belt dressing, available at automotive and hardware stores and home centers.

Step 2: Turn the dryer on. The noise you hear may be the whirl of the spinning drum, not the motor. Some noise is normal.

Step 3: Force a little 20-weight nondetergent motor oil (not all-purpose oil) around the ends of the motor shaft. This lubrication may stop the humming noise. If this doesn't solve the problem, remove the motor and take it to a professional service person.

The centrifugal switch on the dryer motor may be located on top of the motor. Humming, no motor power, and no heat can be caused by a faulty centrifugal switch. If the switch is externally mounted, check the terminals of the switch to make sure they are tight and not burned. If you spot trouble, remove the switch and take it to a professional service person for testing. A faulty switch will probably have to be replaced. Some centrifugal switches are located inside the motor housing; you won't be able to remove the switch in this case. Remove the entire motor and take it to a professional for repairs.

I have a maytag dryer that sometimes when I hit the start button will start and run for only a few minutes and stop and wont start again for a while and does a humming noise when it does star why?

Sounds like the motor is going into thermal overload (Getting hot) it may be caused by the motor itself, or could be overloaded by bearings or fan etc

Dryer turns on but doesn't tumble

  • If you can hear your motor spinning, then it is most likely caused by a broken drum belt.
  • If you can hear your motor 'humming' like it it stuck, then you might have faulty 'motor start capacitor'.
  • If you cannot hear the motor, then it maybe the drying controller board or sometimes the motor itself.
All cases involve dismantling the dryer and best left to a qualified dryer mechanics: check your warranty as the unit may still be under warranty (in which case, call the manufacturer help desk for instructions).

Hope the information helps!

My gas dryer just makes a humming sound when I turn the switch but does nothing. I lifted the top the drum turns easy to the right but a little harder to the left

the humming sound is the motor, either the motor is bad or something is stuck in the blower wheel or the belt broke and is jammed in the motor but either something is stopping the motor from running or it's the motor itself.try this, open the door, with one hand hold in the door switch and with the other hand spin the drum and have someone else push the start button,if the motor starts from you helping it then you know it's the motor,i've done this and the dryer worked after that and then on others it wouldn't run without helping it but it's the motor.next time send the brand name and model number so whoever is helping you we can look up your machine and i can send you a video from utube on how to get into the machine.good luck

Dryer does not start when I push the on button the motor hums.

If the motor continues to hum afteer letting go of the button, then it is likely a broken drum belt. If the motor hums but stops when you let go of the button, something is preventing it from turning. This could be a seized motor or a drum that is stuck, or something caught in the fan blade.

Affinity dryer less than 2 yrs. old will not turn. It hums, but the drum will not turn.

Please check if there's something stuck outside the rotating drum. Sometimes small cloth escapes out of the drum during drying and gets stuck in the rotating shaft. Just try to reach the back side fo the rotating drum inside and make sure that there's no cloth that's stucked inside. Please make sure that you unplug the cord first.
If in case that you did not find anything, you may have a busted capacitor or worse, the motor is defective. It could be that the motor windings are shorted or a bad bushing.
Hope this helps.

a humming sound could be the motor or check to see if something is stuck in blower wheel, try spinning the drum by hand to see if anything is locked up stopping the motor from spinning
