Have a Honda EU6500is generator with 410 hours. I live off grid and run the gen 2-3 hours daily. The generator rpm surges under load on eco throttle and surges under load AND without load when the eco is off. Have had it to the Honda dealership twice. The Tech says he can not get it to surge when hooked to his load center. Yesterday he took the carb apart and says he could not find anything wrong. He sent me home with a tank of premium. Once I had the gen back in it's shed, I decided not to plug in the house cord (to make sure nothing in my house system was causing the problem), instead I plugged a clothes iron and toaster directly into the gen receptacles. Once again the gen surged ... with both eco on and eco off. With echo on, the surge is 3-400 rpm. Can you help me help the tech figure out what is wrong?

JK - What did you need a new seal

JHK - What seal was it - Front Cover or Battery Seal ????

I have the same issue. A new EU6500is, that surges when over 50% load. The piece of paper works. I don't see any seal around the battery cover. Should there be one?

I just toke delivery of a new EU6500is. It's starts to surge as you discribed after it warms up (5 min.). While cold, it the barrery cover off it surges also. When it would start to warm up and show signs of surging, covering the vents in the battery cover would smooth the motor untill it was warm. What did you end up doing to fix the problem?

Amazing worked for me, new generator only 11 hours on it, have already had a lot of problems with this like the battery not holding a charge, the surging I had it in for service three times and have only used it once for a 4 hour power failure.

Same problem. I covered the whole vent system to the height of the battery cover and the surging stopped. Does this hurt the engine? What is the permanent fix?

The battery cover trick worked for me. The cover has to be on to prevent the surging with or without the eco throttle being on. Thanks!

SOURCE: Surging 5000w Coleman Generator

I had a Colman that only surged when it had a large load on it. ConsumerReports.org says that some Coleman generators just can't hold a constant voltage. Hondas are expensive but very good,.

SOURCE: Honda EU3000is Generator is running poorly.

Can anyone help me with the eco-trottle switch when I switch it on it seems to run the same idle whether I have it off or on, what could be causing it not to work, is it a bad switch or I am running 89 octane could that be the problem.

Thanks
Alex

Honda EM5000SX generator - will not idle up when a load is placed on. Will produce power but will not idle up.

from your description and what you do , the problem is in the auto control unit
it will be in the system to reduce the rpm to idle when there is no load ( auto mains on off controller switching between genset and mains supply)
by turning the auto operation off you are committing the gen set to full rpms regardless of the power requirement
you have the option of having it fixed at an gen set repair shop or leaving it off and starting the genset only when you have a mains power outage
check with an electrician to ensure that it is possible to run it that way as if the mains power unit is not correct , when you start it and you still have mains power , it will destroy the gen set

Eu6500is generator trips to red unload when ac is on

Air conditioner compressors require a greater amount of electricity (measured in both volts and amps, but the amps are what is causing the overload). You will need a larger generator to run your AC. You might be able to run a smaller AC unit, but always check the Amps required and compare that to the Amps the circuit breaker on the generator is rated for.

What connector is needed for a remote start?

talk with an accredited electrician as there will have to be a special relay/ breaker in the fuse board of the house
the problem is that your genset cannot be running when utility power comes back on as it will destroy the genset

the electrician can wire the board so that when utility power is available the gen set can be started but not connected to the house
when the utiltiy power fails the relay switches over to the gen set and allows it to start and power the house
when utiltiy power is restored the relay disconnects the gen set and reconnects to the utiltiy power supply
This is not a job for anyone except a fully qualified electrician

What controlls the rpm on a eu6500is

The inverter signals the throttle motor, which is really just a small servo motor on the top of the carb. When the inverter senses more load, it increases the throttle to compensate.

I can't find a free download on the internet, most are Owner's manuals or are not for the exact model you want - I don't know how similar similar models are. You might try the following:

You could try contacting Honda (relevant division) also; if they will provide the manual you want, it might be free

Honda 3000is runs great on eco but hesitates and either stops the load source or stops running itself when under load.

Sounds like the throttle control motor is not adjusting the engine speed to compensate for the load. Does the generator rev up to full speed if you turn OFF eco with NO load?
Funny thing, I have one on my workbench that is doing pretty much the same thing. Runs on eco, revs up with eco off with no load, coughs, sputters and dies with a load in either mode. I will update with what I find when I figure it out in the next week or so. Have a new carb on order.

I swapped the carb and it made no difference. Still backfiring (rather dramatically) and won't stay running. I see on some other posts that Valve lash will cause this. It makes total sense as the exhaust valve gap actually tightens as the engine wears which would keep the exhaust valve slightly open when it ain't supposed to be allowing raw fuel to enter the muffler.
With this one I can believe it as it has a ton of hours on it and I know they have never been adjusted.
I will try to get a chance to do it over the weekend and update this post when I do.

Tune up Honda can some one pick up at home and take to shop the bring back ?

Most common problem with under underutilised genset is stale fuel. At best drain all the fuel and refill at worst the fuel system will need flushing.

Yamaha ef 2800 i, fresh fuel, cleaned carb, major surge with eco. switch on, slight search, no load with eco. switch off. near perfect under 75% load. output steady 119.9 to 120.00 volts.

I hope you have not moved the genny from lower to high altitude b cause the carbs of these gen sets are tuned at the sea level and they give their best performence up to 1000 meters or so in altitude from sea level if you hav'nt moved the generator then check the air fuel mix screw on the carb that screw controls the the oxygen supply required inside to burn the appropriate quantity of fuel take a screw driver and adjust by rotating it anticlockwise on idle with eco switch on then put it on 75%load and try adjusting the screw both ways clockwise and anticlockwise with switching the load on and off with eco throttle off you will find a point where the engine will run smooth but mind it the screw has to be moved very slowly either side usualy these problems accur on high altitudes when the oxygen suppy goes less then the jet in the carb is to be reduced and air fuel mix has to be adjusted which is called re jetting of the carb You say you have cleaned the carb may be accidently while cleaning the air fuel mix screw might got disturbed just check
