Did you see them pull out the roots? The camera has become a sale tool that makes a great deal of money. If I were you I would sit on the job and not do anything right now.
If and when it stops up again you need to watch them work. Check the cable they are going to use and make sure there are not roots on the cable from an other job. Then watch them run the cable if they dont pull back roots. You dont have roots.
If they do pull back roots then you must chose to kive with the cost of snaking out the line lets say every year or 6 months. If that the case you need to ask your self how long am I going to stay here,
It might be cheaper to clean the drain out for 200.00 than to spent 10.000.00 for a new line.
I am not saying that 10.000.00 dollars is your number depending what state you live in will control the cost.
But a rule of thumb would be anywhere from 100.00 per foot to 200.00 per foot. Get 3 prices you can do that over the phone. Just ask the guy who you are talking to now and ask him or her " how long of a run is it?" so then you have your footage the ask him his price per foot.
Best of luck Dont get taken and if you replace the line tell them you want a permit and a copy of it and the inspection card.
Best of luck RJ
If your sewer is full of roots, they got in some how, a crack or improper joint. Also, there must have been some amount water standing in the sewer. Roots are to sewers like mice are to houses. If there is the slightest way in, they will get in.
You don't say if you are on a city sewer or a private disposal system. City sewer is pretty straight forward though you may have to get permits to do the work. A private system, it may be lots more than the sewer pipe. There could be other problems with your system. Hopefully, you know where everything is and you have had it cleaned within the past 5 years . Hopefully the drain field is good.
Whats fair? Excellent question. Depends on the work that has to be done and the amount of peril you are in. A new system could cost (in my area on the Eastern Seaboard) $15,000.00 or more.
A lot of the effort will depend on how deep the pipe is. If it is only a few feet under ground, you can probably fix it yourself. Simply dig up the old and remove it. Replace it with new plastic. If cast iron, you can crack it with a special tool you can rent at the tool rental place or you can cut it with a hack saw or sawzall. Connect the new pipe to the old using a special rubber fitting called a Fern Co in my area.
If your sewer is deep - you probably cannot do it by hand.
Good luck with your project. Thanks for your question @ FixYa.com
Camera's are a great tool used properly you can record your travel through the pipe. Also you can locate different parts of the pipe like joints. also relinging a pipe is another option on sewer main drain line. But this is a fix that usually is more high priced than digging up your yard be contractor bids it high enough so that if linning fails they can still dig it up and make money
