When the CPU in the computer or laptopoverheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot upagain until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then theCPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes this problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan. If the fan and heat sink is clogged withdust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use acan of compressed air to do this.

Dvd drive isn't recognizing discs, only makes a loud whirring noise, what could be the problem?

Bearing in the spindle damaged or worn, throwing the disc into an erratic motion, optical laser cannot then read the disc with any accuracy. You need to replace the drive

I have a HPdv4t laptop with the optiarc dvd rw ad-7560s ata device (firmware: SH03). It doesn't read dvd like it used to. It reads a dvd disc with lots of noise coming out of it n takes even hours to open...

This issue occurs due to corrupt registry settings.
Run Microsoft Fix it to remove drive limits. You can find the fix in the HP website provided below:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00678214&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3745839

Also reinstall the CD/DVD drive drivers from device manager. If the drive still makes loud noise when any disc is inserted, then it states that it has gone bad. If u r under warranty contact HP to get a free replacement.

My wii makes loud noises and when i turn the game on it says to eject disc turn off wii and look at the manuel. Sometimes the game will load but will shut off during and says disc can not be read. How can...

Sounds like something is stuck inside of your Wii's DVD Drive... someone may have stuck something in the slot? Coins? credit card? paper? Etc... sounds like this is preventing the disc from being read properly. Either this, or something inside of the drive has become broken.

The following website sells the DVD drive mechanisms and does repairs on the Wii as well:

Cd Drive in Mac iBook 4 is malfunctioning. Disc will not mount.

Shut the machine down. Find the original CD or a retail OS X installation DVD. Start the machine up and immediately hold down the option key. You will see a icon of your hard drive. Now insert the CD or DVD. If it immediately spits out, your optical drive needs replacement. If it does not, click on the U-shaped arrow button to rescan the drives. If the CD/DVD does not show up, your optical drive needs replacement. If it does, choose it and boot from it. If this actually works, you may have a software problem -- this is low probability, but possible.
Keep in mind that the CD and DVD read heads are separate. If one of those is malfunctioning, your drive will accept CDs but not DVDs, or vice versa. If you see this behavior, your optical drive needs replacement.

Can play cd's but not dvd's, just a rythmic wirring sound and green activity light

Hey,

just looking at the specifications, it should work with All CD's and Read Normal DVD discs, the movies that you can rent and buy from any store but it appears its a combo drive (Cd burner, and a DvD reader) It will only read DVD-rom and maybe few other things but it wont play any r or rw dvd's. It might also read already burned dvd r and rw discs but it wont read a empty one.

if it won't read any dvd's it could be a dirty lens. here's a video on the cleaning, its annoyingly loud but shows how to clean the lens with rubbing alcohol.

may want to turn the volume down in advance:

its for a ps2 but the drive is basically the same, and you would clean the lens in the same way.

let me know how that goes.
Thanks,
Ekse

Acer Aspire not booting

I'm inclined to believe something is going on with the DVD drive, perhaps a I/O cable or driver issue, it just seems like what you said about the drive sounding like it's trying to read is a clue, what I would try if you have not already ,is since you said you can get to get to the Bios usually the default for boot sequence is CD/DVD drive first unless you change it, see if you can change the boot sequence from DVD drive first to HDD first and see if you can bypass it, then it might just boot, if that works then that was the cause,I see no other reason why the Drive should be trying to read other than the boot sequence. if not then it might be more complicated and could be a hardware issue somewhere,

Hoep this helps.
