My Maytag washer is expierencing a loud noise when it kicks into the agitation cycle. When agitation begins, it will run for a minute or so then stop, and not restart. It also has a bad smell in the wash tub when this occurs. If I hold the start knob in just a little bit, it quiets down to normal, sounds like it agitates faster (normally), and will continue to run. When I let the knob out the noise begins again and it shuts down. If I let it cycle by itself from the start, it keeps shutting off, and then turning on a few minutes later, then repeats this.

Top Loader? That sounds like a gearbox problem. It is not an easy fix. With that much use and those many years, it is probably time for a new one. A new High Efficiency Front Loader, will save you a fortune in water, electricity and detergent.

My Maytag Performa makes a grinding sound when it agitates. When it starts to dump the water it makes a loud grinding on metal sound... really loud. What is the problem and how much to fix?
I just replaced the trans in my maytag.if the washer is less than 5 years old trans is covered under warranty. but here is the kicker, labor and thrush bearing is not. trans cost is about 300.00 and labor is about the same. a new washer is about 450.00 So if you know someone who can do trans.[like for free] if not buy a new one. Sounds like the motor is going bad. It will only get louder before it finally stops. There is a device that assists the agitation motion that may be bad or is going bad.
Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.
