I have had my acer aspire 5100-5674 for a year now and, unfortunately, the thing just started having problems....a big one!
I turn on the computer, and the power button lights up, and stays lit, but nothing els happens. The screen is completely black, no cursor, no light, no boot, nothing. It makes noise for a few seconds then pretty much goes quiet.The battery is working, i opened it up, the fan works. I didn't spill anything on it or do anything to it. I am going crazy and have NO idea how to fix it. Especially since I can't get into it at all.
I have an ACER Aspire. Try the battery. Had same type of problem. If you have AC adapter try taking the battery out and plug into adapter only. If it comes up replace the battery. If notyou probably did fry the board.
Might be a bad hard drive.
the other thing i can suggest is that you hook a external monitor to the computer and see if you can see something.
one question did you leave the machine on over night and was it on you bed or somewhere else because if the ventalation was poor you could have over heated the main board.
either on the side or the bottom of the machine you should be able to remove the hard drive. take it out and leave it out. put the battery back in try to turn it on. it the screen boots. the hard drive is dead it nothing happens then it might be the main board.

i have almost the same problem with my acer aspire 5100 wlmi
the screen is black take two sounds after i swich on and then it seams that the cd have continuos sounds like haw the cd inside is move forward and bacward ,and is blinkingthe light on the cd
Please if somebody can give a hand, can make me really happy cz i need a lot my compu

OK. I'm assuming it's probably the hard drive or the graphics card. That's not exactly a solution though. I know very little about computers and all, but it was working yesterday, and now it's black. I don't think the hard drive just **** the bed over night. Is there anything els?
when i turn it on the hard disk drive light comes on for a second, than it turns off, so yes, im assuming its the hard drive. It stopped working last night after I had been using it for a while, it was not in my bed or anything but on my desk. I just went to sleep, because it does get fussy sometimes. Is the ANYTHING i can do to check or repair the hard drive, or something I don't know. I am a 22 year old grad student and this computer runs my life right now. I don't have the money for a new one, and my warranty expired less than a month ago.
it's not the battery, i've tried starting it with the AC adapter only. It's got to be either the hard drive or the graphics. I don't have an external monitor to check
I took out the hard drive, and it still wouldn't do anything beyond the black screen. I took it to the university IT ppl. They looked at it for about five seconds, told me they didn't think it was a hard drive issue, probably the motherboard. I don't know they were assholes anyways because I don't have a warranty and I don't live on campus
my friend, the problem is the BIOS if powers up but you still cant get the bios splashscreen it means something flashed your bios, (like those idiots at www.e-support.com that send you all the wrong files and drivers. or a mean virus) if you have warranty i suggest you call the store service (acer customer service sucks) so they can send you a box by fedex for you to send your laptop....you cant flash your bios back to normal, specially when it got like that without apparent reason
screen is black, power light works for 2-3 sec. and then nothing happens
