Buck In-Sink-Erator BADGER 5XP BADGERVEXP Garbage Disposal Garbage Disposal - Bl Logo
Posted on Sep 03, 2011

My insinkerator is humming and not working. I bought the wrench and keep playing with it but it it stuck. My son insists that the engine is seized but I feel if it were seized it would not turn on at all. I believe it could be the dishwashing liquid spout that fell off.

Your Badger 5 spins the blades counter clockwise. If you want to dislodge an item stuck in their, you have to spin the blades clockwise. I use the handle end of my plunger to do this. If it turns free with the handle, it should work when you turn it back on. If you don't hear it hum any more their is a little red reset button on the bottom of the motor housing you must press to reset it.

I think I ground up a plastic bag in disposal....I have cleared out as best I can, turned the blades with a wrench, re set the button, but it won't move, just humming....does the unit need to be...

Don't keep running the disposal when it is humming or motor will burn up.
You might need a plumber, and/or might need to replace disposal.

1) If the disposal cutter disc turns freely, and motor will not start then disposal has gone bad.

2) If disposal cutter disc is still stuck, then you might be able to salvage by removing two nuts on p-trap below sink.
P-trap drops free.
Remove 2 bolts holding tailpiece to side of disposal so you have access to plastic bag from below the cutter disc.
Keep removing plastic bag and keep working the wrench from below. It should eventually give way.
Put wood broomstick down sink opening and wedge broomstick against sink opening to get cutter disc to rotate.
Spray WD40 into opening to help lubricate the struck parts.

3) I wrote ez disposal replacement steps that also cover tips for reassembling p-trap.

Badger 1/2 HP garbage disposal not working. Motor hums, blades are not rotating. I can rotate the service wrench with tension.

I would keep working the impeller back and forth with wrench while running hot water thru disposal until it turns freely. You can see if there are any small bone fragments or other debris in grinding chamber and removing with long needle nose pliers. Good luck. Thank you.

I have a Badger 5 1/2 HP garbage disposal. When I turn on the power switch it just makes a humming sound but doesn't engage. Is there a reset button somewhere on the unit that might need a...

There should be a reset button (circuit breaker) on the bottom of the unit. It sounds more like the blades are stuck. Pull the plug on the unit and use an allen wrench on the manual blade turner on the bottom of the unit. If the blades are stuck, you will have to try and loosen them with the allen wrench. If you do get them loose, the question then is what was holding them. Could be debris in the ISE or something broken like a blade. Keep the unit unplugged when working on it.

InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal: It hums but doesn't work. The wrench moves freely ...

If the blades move freely with the wrench and stick and motor hums then it sounds like it is time to replace the unit. Have you tried the reset switch? If it is humming than it is probably not tripped but worth a try. Hope this helps.

In sinkerator will only "hum" and not run to grind food

On The bottom of the unit there should be a place to put an allen wrench. Unplug unit, Insert wrench and turn the wrench back and forth this moves the blades if the blades move freely then nothing is stuck. If wrench does not move freely, with flash light inspect inside of disposal (the rubber flaps are usually removable to gain better eye site) if objects (bones, utensil, etc) are noticed remove them and try the wrench again if now freed problem solved. If wrench turned freely from the beginning and motor still hums. Replace disposal.

I hope this has answered your question, please rate how helpful the answer was. Good Luck and Have a great day.

Badger 1 1/3 HP Garbage disposal is stuck. I have hit the reset button took out what was jamming it and it still hums but won't turn. Please help!

Can you turn the motor by hand? (with the wrench in the bottom of the disposal) If not then you either still have a restriction/jam or the motor is seized. If you can spin the motor somewhat freely with the wrench then you most likely have a bad motor and will have to replace it. Hope this helps

The blades on my Badger 1 insinkerator don't move. The motor hums when turned on. The reset button stays out when pushed.

You will need to free the blades by inserting the food disposal hex key or a 1/4 Allen Wrench into the very bottom of the disposal in the center. After inserting the wrench you need to turn it all the way in both directions to free what has the blades held up. It may be hard to turn but afterwards pull the debris out from inside the disposal. Hit the reset button and it will work. Do not keep turning it on until you free the blade and then reset.
