A good place to look for a new harddrive is newegg.com. What you want to look for is a large cache, fast read/write speed RPMs and harddrive size. A good laptop harddrive would have 7200RPMs 32mb cache and roughly 500 GB harddrive space. Also check quality by viewing user reviews. I personally like Western Digital.

if its your motherboard that crashed then ther is no problem with your hard disk. connect your hard disk to any other computer and you can access all the files in it.
if it is your harddsik that crashed then try recovery utilities like western digital data storege manger or any other disk recovery tool available for free. if still it fails then you can recover your data if you hand over your hard disk to the nearest service centre. but recover from a hard disk only if its very valuable. thay will charge you per MB of data recovered
