Worth a try:
plug in an external monitor and see if it works. If it does, your screen might have become unplugged (happened to me) or may need to be replaced.

Dell includes a series of tests for a system's hardware into the BIOS called the PSA+ Diagnostics. You can run these tests even if the system lacks any media (hard drive, CD drive, etc.). To launch the PSA+ Diagnostics on this system, perform one of the following actions:

  • Hold down the key while pressing the power button.
  • Turn on the system, press at the initial Dellā„¢ logo screen, and select Diagnostics from the boot menu.
  • Disconnect the AC power and remove the battery. While holding down the power button, insert the AC connector into the back of the system. The system then starts and the message Diagnostic boot selected displays. The system then launches the PSA+ Diagnostics.
  • If all tests pass you will need to re-install the operating system software.

My dell vostro 1710 laptop computer screen is black.

First, try reseating the memory modules in the laptop.

If still nothing, try removing the hard drive, CD/DVD Drive, and memory one at a time (in that order) see if anything makes it boot.

Replace the parts and try booting again.

The error flashing means a processor failure. If you are knowledgeable you can try re-seating the processor.

However, if your unit is in warranty I would call Dell and have them replace the main board and the memory modules as a set. Warning: They will make you go thru these same tests even if you already have.

Dell Inspiron 1501 won't boot

The initial Dell Screen you see at the begining is your BIOS access. Push F12 repeatedly when you see this screen and it will take you into a system restore mode. It will let you boot from CD first (which your PC is not set up for). You should be able to start the CD fine from there.

Dell Inspiron 1000 Unmountable Boot Volume. CD drive faulty.

f2 should get you to bios ,move cd rom to first boot device save and exit,on restart f12 should give you a one time boot option pick cd rom ,and boot to windows disk, hitting f8 or f6 at just the right time during start up should get you to the advanced startup menu ,safe mode ,last known good configuration ,ect...hope this helps, otherwise pull the plug, and battery ,open it up and find the bios battery on the motherboard ,unplug it,or remove it,if its the watch battery type ,be carefull takeing it out ,the socket its in will break off the board, let it sit for a couple hrs,put it back and try agian

Inspiron 1420 is not booting to windows

Hi,
Re-boot, Keep tapping F8 until you get to a black screen, last known good is there, choose this, leave it to run,

or try again re-boot, choosing safe mode this time, if/when it boots, then a system restore in safe mode, go back in time.

If still no good, Your O/S disc is now needed,
boot with disc, go for a repair of the install,
Let it run it's course,
re-boot.

Regards.
