I have a 2053BW monitor and am getting a 3cm black border around the screen on start up, the border is actually on top of the desktop and obscures some of the writing. If I restart the comp straight away it fixes itself...till next time it does it, which is about 1 in 3 startups.

Control Panel/Appearance and Personalization/Display/Adjust resolution. Try higher resolutions on the list.
If that doesn't do it I would go to Device Manager, and update driver for display adapter. May need to go to the manufacturers website
and Support Tab for drivers.

This can be caused either by your monitor or the video adapter in your computer, other has a fault. Check your cables they may be loose.

Right click on your desktop screen and click screen resolution,click on resolution and try a different setting.Keep changes and click apply.If that helps,keep trying different resolutions until your desktop is right for you :)

Look around the buttons on the screen for one that can auto configure it. That is the one you want.

No CRT on a laptop.
It is more likely a driver issue.
Go to dell.com, look for support, put in your service tag & update the graphics drivers.

GO TO CONTROL PANEL ,,DISPLAY OPTIONS,,, CHANGE YOU RESOLUTION

There are two things which could have caused this. One, the Monitor settings have changed or the computers display settings have changed.

1. Resetting the monitor to default.
Push the 'MENU' button to open the OnScreedDisplay system and display the main features menu. Push the - and + buttons to move between the function icons
Use the buttons to highlight 'Factory Reset' (this returns the settings to the factory preset values for the selected group of functions)

2. Checking the desktop display settings.
Right click on the desktop and select properties, click on settings and make sure screen resolution is set to one of the following 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768. These are the only ones supported by the monitor

If both this fails. Then the monitor is nearing end of life

I had the same problem you described as small screen in the middle with black border around it. The only resolution that made the screen fill the LCD panel was 1024 x 768. THAT IS WRONG!!!
