I have a 13kw lp unit installed 5 yrs. ago. Three times now it hasgone into an overspeed condition and has blown almost every circut board in customers house. Boiler controls,AC circuit boards, even light bulbs. I changed the control board in unit and checked voltage and frequency, all to spec. Will run fine and power house for 5 to 6 hours before speeding up and blowing everything and shutting down. Help!! Russ Kell Electric

This sounds like the stepper motor is failing with heat. Given the Hz signal is straight from the alternator.... a loss of the signal would intially cause the unit to overspeed. (Wiring from alternator to control board problem maybe... also heat related)
The only thing that made sense to me is a problem in the 10 Ohm freq sensors or the stepper motor.

Noting you have changed the control board and your still having overspeeds Look at the the Hz sense portion. I would bet your shutdonws are being initiated due to over-voltage vs over-speed. That you may have to sort out.

Sounds like a long day... of troubleshooting. 5 - 6 hours wait and then PANIC just to duplicate it!
Hopefully you have the service manual. I have the one for the 15Kw and Up.. but sense circuitry is pretty much the same.

Sense circuit...

* Measure resistance across any combination of orange, yellow, brown, or black should read approximately 20 OHMS.

* Measure from red to any other lead should read 10 OHMS.
* Testing from any lead to stepper motor case should read INFINITY.

Orange or black to Black or green One leg... 20 Ohms
Yellow or Red to Brown or white 2nd leg 20 Ohms

Again Stepper motor or sense wiring / windings... is where I think the problem lies.

Good luck and I am willing to keep taking stabs at this. 40 years as an electrican here.

I wanted to add a couple of experiences I had over the last 4 decades. Two in particular.

    - I had a unit that would overspeed at random only in the winter time. After weeks of back and forth I FINALLY fgured out that when their furnace kicked on the unit would speed up because it was leaning out. i.e the furnace and the generator were on the same gas line and the furnace would drop the NG pressure so the Generator would lean out. (Talk about heartaches!)

    - One other unit... It also would overspeed and shut down. The main line gas presure was to low because the regulator by the meter was stuck in a fixed position so anytime there was other than nominal gas usage the generator would lean out. This one was associated with meal times. When they started using their gas range and the generator was running it would speed up and often trip off.

Just passing on some food for thought if you run out of other viable options. I would still concentrate on the sense circuit for now and possibly even rewire the sense circuit and do MEGGER checks looking for stray grounds when the unit was HOT.

I do wish you the best.

If you need a service manual I think I can find a PDF copy for you on line that you could download.(Free!) I would appreciate having the model number so I can get the correct manual link for you.

Generac over-speed fault

check your frequency of the ac, if this is high, then adjust the rpms.
If that is fine and it is shutting down, check overspeed adjustment on control board if it has it.

OS or O5 Error on Landice L-Series Treadmills

Probable Cause

An OS or O5 error on the Landice L-Series treadmills, such as the L7, L8 and L9, indicates an over speed condition and this occurs when the actual speed of the running belt is faster than the set speed. The possible causes for an overspeed, OS or O5, error are: A) User weight is over 200lbs, treadmill elevation is set between 10% and 15% grade and speed is set between .5 mph and 3 mph
B) User is pushing against treadmill belt causing it to go faster than the set speed
C) Defective lower board or misaligned speed sensor
D) Maladjusted speed potentiometer

Corrective Action

A) Gravitational force will enable the user's weight to move the treadbelt faster than the set speed. The speed sensor will pick up this increase in flywheel speed and sends this information up to the display electronics. The microprocessor will then compare the actual speed to the displayed speed, determine a runaway speed condition and shut the treadmill down. An overspeed will display in the window. This is a safety feature built into all treadmills that utilize closed loop speed circuitry. The way to address an over speed condition due to gravity is have the user decrease elevation below 10% or increase the speed.

B) Similar to the gravitational force, a user can be holding onto the handrails and pushing the running belt in such a manner where they are using the treadmill like a manual machine rather than a motorized one. User needs to set speed compatible for their actual walking or jogging speed so they are not pushing the belt.

C) It's possible a blown motor control board is the problem. This occurs more frequently with PWM drives than SCR drives. However, this problem is becoming rare due to the PWM circuitry which senses this condition and shuts itself down before the drive motor receives any DC voltage at all. This means you'll get an LS or L5 error if your PWM is blown, not an OS or O5 error. This is a safety feature on all Landice home treadmills with PWM motor control boards. The SCR motor control boards also have internal protection to prevent an over speed condition from occuring due to an internal component failure. In the rarest of cases, on home treadmills, a faulty relay board can cause an OS or O5. To verify this, using a digital voltmeter, with treadmill turned on, measure the DC voltage between the V+ and P1 on the PWM board. The reading should be between 6-7 VDC. Also measure the DC voltage between P1 and P2 on the PWM board. The reading should be between 0.5 VDC and 6-7 VDC. If either of these voltages measure zero, replace the relay board.

D) Get into Open Loop Speed mode and check the speed. Adjust pots as necessary to bring up correct speed for max and min.

Generac Guardian 12 KW Model 04456-2 shuts down on overspeed in cold weather

Leigh,
See my 5/22/12 comments on my "overspeed fault" problem resolution [Generac 43903 standby Generator overspeed indicator on starting] . If it only runs for a few seconds and then quits, you may have a similar condition to the one my unit had. A good technician should be able to diagnose the problem and determine if you have a similar failure to the one I had, or one of the other causes suggested by RSG000.

I have an older 30KW Generac SG 030 1800rpm running on Nat Gas which I bought used. It has set up for several years. I installed a new PN0830890SRV master control board I bought from the local Generac...

need to calibrate the main control board. 83089. also is it overspeed or overcrank? if the board does not see the right rpm or is blow a certain threshold it will think it has not started yet and shut down on overcrank.

American Standard blower will not run

Sounds like motor has failed. If the red light is blinking it may be telling you what is wrong by the number of blinks. It maybe locked out for some reason or loose wire. Try turning off breakers to inside unit for 5 mins and try again, this may reset unit. But it sounds like a bad motor or circut board. Try running with stat in on position instead of auto in cooling mode.

Fan and lights come on and go off all day long on their own

We installed our Broan-Allure range hood about ten years ago. On three seperate occasions since, the fan has randomly turned on and none of the control buttons would turn it off. After a while it turns itself off. During those same times, when you turned the lights on, they would blink before finally staying on. On each occasion, I have removed the screens and metal underpieces to gain access to the circut board. Once you can see the circut board, remove and replace the 3 Amp fuse that is mounted on the board. (Radio Shack part # 270-1054)...even if the fuse looks good, replace it. Each time this has work for about three years, then it acts up again..
