Low transmission fluid can cause this. Check the fluid with the vehicle running in Park or Neutral. Make sure to block the wheels and use the emergency brake for safety.
If it is not transmission fluid you could have a transmission problem. They commonly do this but there doesn't seem to be a recall on it.
Check the transmission fluid before you do anything else.

We have a 2011 ford f350 and are trying to t/s the reverse lights. we checked the fuses. what else might it be. we cant find a diagram to the wiring.

In the BJB - battery junction box under the hood ,is a reversing lamp relay. Check it or try a known good one !an check fuse F70 10amp in the BJB .

Reversing Lamps

The reversing lamp system consists of the following components:

  • Rear lamps
  • Reversing lamp switch
  • PCM
  • BCM

When the transmission is placed in REVERSE (R), the BCM provides voltage to the reversing lamps. The reversing lamps are located within the rear lamp assemblies.
When the transmission is in REVERSE, the PCM (gasoline engine) or the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engine) sends a message over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) to the Body Control Module (BCM) indicating the transmission is in REVERSE. The BCM provides voltage to the reversing lamps when it receives the message that the transmission is in REVERSE and the ignition is in the RUN state. You could have a transmission range sensor problem , check to see if it is adjusted correctly ! Need to have a scan tool to make sure the BCM is receiving signal from the PCM . This is complex for someone who doesn't deal with or know about serial data communications ! All it is ,is electric inputs to a control module, then the control module configures it into data bits an bytes 1's an 0's then sends it out on the Data bus. The module that needs this info reads it an turns on the lights. This system can set codes in the bcm ,leading to a problem.

  • DTC B1277:11 (Reverse Lamp: Circuit Short To Ground) - a DTC that sets when the BCMdetects a short to ground from the reversing lamp output circuit.
  • DTC B1277:15 (Reverse Lamp: Circuit Short To Battery or Open) - a DTC that sets when the BCMdetects an open from the reversing lamp output circuit.
  • Could set codes in the PCM - powertrain control module for a transmission range sensor problem !
