Hello, I have a honda GX240 engine on my Coleman powermax generator, that worked perfectly during the storm, then i go to start it to check the 240 volt line and get this.... the stupid thing is blowing tons of heavy smoke then shuts off in 30 seconds or so... I can repeat this 10 times, and the smoke will NOT clear out, stupid thing is a smoke machine and fills the yard with blums of smoke... it is burning and dripping a ton of oil... seems to be blowing a lot of oil or oil & gas both out the muffler manifold and dripping heavily around the exhaust manifold like it is pumping oil, this is weird.... Is this a carb overflow issue, or maybe a valve issue or simply a broken ring out of the clear blue? worked fine, then moved it and now a smoke factory that runs over and over for 30 seconds. Thank you for the help!

I have a honda 8.0 GX240 on a generator and when i go to start it. It acts like it isnt getting a spark the engine isnt turning over i checked the plug and fuel lines and still nothing

Is there sufficient oil in the crankcase? Most all generators have an oil level sensor that shuts down the ignition if the oil level gets low.

I have a Honda generator model EM3500X with auto idle. The auto idle solenoid does not work when you throw the switch to auto. Switch is good, replaced the solenoid, still does not work. Any ideas?...

The control board that senses load (current) is not working. It should drop to low with no output current. (nothing running)

Powermax 2" water pump vs Honda 2" water pump

You need to look at the engine

Cheaper units use a Briggs & Stratton unit which is noisy and tends to wear

Honda uses their own and normally runs sweeter and longer without any drama.

Check for oil consumption on both units again the Honda seems to fare better

One drawback is that the Honda unit is more of an attraction to thieves so if it is left unattended it may take a walk

Coleman Powermate only puts out 110V

If you haven't seen it yet, here is a page that may help with a manual or parts list.

This problem sounds kind of bad, generators don't do well when the engine stops under load.
Start by checking the circuit breakers in the distribution box (outlet panel) - you need ot do this with an ohm meter. After that check the power windings of the stator with the ohm meter, be sure to check between the 2 windings (should be open), and from each one to ground with the winding isolated.
Whining, a burning varnish smell, and breakers that trip all the time are indicators of long term overload problems. This could happen if you had most of the load on one winding for a significant amount of time, or if the one winding mostly powered motor-like loads with high startup currents.

You may want to look at this answer I posted some time ago.

Coleman 6250 gen

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the generator, I'm not sure what the Amp rating on a 1 hp compressor is, but starting currents can be 5 or more times the rated current, especially for starting heavy loads like compressors. While the motor only needs it for a short time, if it doesn't get it, it ain't gonna start. If you really need to run this compressor off this generator, one possible solution is to see if the compressor motor has connections inside to wire it for 240 volt operation. I realize in theory you should have available the same full power rating from the generator at 120 v and 240 v. However, many times a motor will still start more easily on 240 than 120, for the same reason that automobile starters went from 6 volt to 12 volt. If you do change the voltage to 240, BE SURE TO CHANGE THE POWER CORD AND PLUG ON THE COMPRESSOR!!!

As a side note, I have one of these generators I purchased as "refurbished", and it is flakey. It works, mostly, but not exactly right. I'm working on it. So anything COULD be wrong.
