Staying on The picture doesn't stay on. It flickers periodically on & off. The computer sygnal is going through as I can see the screen when it comes on, but it stays on for a fraction of a second & then switches off, then back on again & so on. Any chance that it's an easy fix?

If you have not been using the TV for quite sometime, moisture would have developed some defects inside the TV when you switched on. Sometimes even insects and lizards might get in and cause short circuits. Anyhow this might require attention by a qualified service technician.

Disconnect the lcd from the computer. Turn on the LCD and see if it still flickers fast. If it doesn't then go ahead reconnect the lcd back to the computer. If its still flickering, then go ahead and hook it up to another laptop or desktop. If it doesn't flicker on another computer then that means there is a problems with the video card on the original computer.
If it still flickers then that means the lcd is bad and would need to be replaced.

screen is going bad which is why its flickering and has the lines across the screen. Theres a board behind the lcd and when that doesn't process the voltage properly it can cause the screen to flicker. White lines across the screen means the screen is going bad. At this point unless your monitor is under warranty, go ahead and replace it.

Ur LCD inverter board is dead.Must replaced.It usually a long board.

Ur main video backlight board is dead,must be replaced.

This could be a faulty video cable or connector or CCFL lamp or inverter.
Try reseating the video cable/connector that connects to the motherboard first.
If this doesn't work then to determine if you have a LCD screen, inverter or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Replace the screen, you can download the pixel tester softwar to figure out if the screen is going bad. I'm pretty sure it is.

If you change the inverter its either the onboard video card on your laptop (usually not replaceable easily) or the screen.

could be some bad solder connections on the crt socket or around the flyback area dealing with the brightness
