We have a 96 rexhall rv. we have had the unit plugged into shore power from the house and had been running the air conditioner. it ran great about 4 times and now we can not get it to kick on with just the shore power, but on the generator it works great. what do you think is wrong? thank you.

If your plugged in to a 15 amp household receptacle, then an extension cable of any kind or length, then that is likely your problem. An AC unit should have 20 amps of good power available to it. If your using an extension cord of any kind, and it is any less than 12 gauge wire, then that will cause a drop in voltage as well. Obviously the best scenario would be to install and wire a 30 amp receptacle outside your house just for that use, if done often. Take a voltage reading at receptacle, then inside RV, and see how it is probably a little less without even the AC on, then when AC kicks in, or tries to.
It may work once in a while, but it's not good for the AC to try and operate on low voltage, which causes a higher amperage draw.

What can I troubleshoot to determine why my RV Rooftop Heatpump does not work on generator, only shore power?

There are a couple of possible causes:

1. There is a Front/Rear Switch somewhere in the unit, usually in the main salon or near the breaker box. This is most common if your generator is not large enough to run 2 units at the same time. It is not always labeled as such, sometimes it's just 1 or 2 and in others it's a set of breakers.

2. You have dropped a leg from the generator output. Normally the generator has 2 outputs, each feeding a separate circuit. This could be in the generator, the transfer switch or the breaker box. If you have issues with other 110v circuits, this would be a place to start.

Yes. Each air conditioner is likely 12 amps even if it is 15 amps would equal 45 amps. Your cable plug may heat up and melt the receptacle if the cord cap isn't cleaned of oxides (tarnish) use sand paper or scrape with a sharp knife

When I am plugged in to shore power my front and back a/c works fine. When I am running the generator the back a/c runs fine but the front a/c when turned on I hear a click near the unit but it does not...

it sounds as though the front a/c is not connected to the generator or has become diconnected some how. I would check for power to the unit when the generator is running. Hope this helps Tim

Front AC unit will not turn on

The clicking tells me the AC(hydro) power has been turned off to it. Check all breakers, and make sure if you have another switch on wall, to change from front, to back, or to both, that it is in proper position.
