Your HP all-in-one provides three levels for adjusting the ring and speaker volume. The ring volume is the volume of the phone rings. The speaker volume is the level of everything else, such as the dial tones, fax tones, and button press beeps. The default setting is Soft. 1.Press Setup. 2.Press 4, and then press 8. This displays the Basic Fax Setup menu and then selects Ring and Beep Volume. 3.Press the down arrow to select one of the options: Soft, Loud, or Off. Note If you select Off, you will not hear a dial tone, fax tones, or incoming ring tones. 4 Press OK.
If that does nothing and is exactly what you have already tried then I think its safe to say that the internal speaker is damaged and will need to be replaced unless you can live without it.

The processor is locked up in unit and that is why you can't hear it, if you unplug the unit from the wall for 30 Min, that will fix the problem.

Then the control board needs change out, and that should fix the problem.

Fax machine not sending documents

A) Run the fax test on the printer itself to see if it's connected properly and has an active phone line.. HP All-in-one printers still make a dial tone sound even if they aren't connected to a phone line. To run the test 1)..Press the SETUP button. Press the down arrow button until "Tools" is highlighted then pres OK. 2) Press down arrow key again and select "Run Fax test" The printer will then print out the results. It will tell you if anything fails. If it does, the correct the problem it mentions. IF everything passes, then the problem is likely your cable phone line which is a "Digital" and Fax machines still use an analog signal. Here is what you can try to overcome the deficiencies in a cable phone system. 1) Set your fax speed to Medium 2) Turn your ECM (Error correction mode) OFF
To set your fax speed, Press the SETUP button again.. Press your down arrow again until you find "Advanced Fax Settings" and the press OK.. arrow down until you find "Fax Speed" and hit OK. Then choose Medium (14,400) and press OK This will take you to your previous menu (Advanced Fax setings).. Find "ECM Choose OK again.. Then choose OFF and press OK. Press the X button on your printer's control panel and then Retry your fax.. Hope this helps

I can fax to local numbers but not to long distance numbers. Phone company has no clue.

Your problem is how you have set up your long distance carrier. You may not be able to use your fax if you must first go through a phone card system. However, sometimes you can use enough pauses in your fax dialing to get through it. If your long distance carrier is your local phone company, they SHOULD be able to tell you how to dial.

How to set up fax number on my 7310 all-in-one.

According to the HP manual for this unit:

1. Verify that your HP all-in-one is set to answer fax calls automatically. (Press the Auto Answer button so the light is on.)
2. Press Setup.
3. Press 5, and then press 1.This displays the Advanced Fax Setup menu and then selects Answer Ring Pattern.
4. Press the down arrow key to highlight an option, and then press OK. When the phone rings with the ring pattern assigned to your fax phone line, the HP all-in-one answers the call and receives the fax.

You can download the manual from HP here if you've misplaced yours and need more setup information.

Problem with my hp 640 fax

once you dial the number you fax will automatically start sending the the Fax signal which sounds like short beeps. This is done so the receivers phone (when answered) will recognized the beeps and switch to fax receive mode.  If you are getting the recording that you mentioned above, that means the number you dialed was not successful in making the connection.  Once you dial the number you should hear the phone ringing followed by some churping noises when the other end answers the call... then other churping and gargle like sounds initially as the fax proceeds.
sounds like your are having trouble with the number you are dialing.
Hope this helps..

Fax using a calling card

I use a calling card for long distance faxes. You don't have to "set" anything. They just mean listen to the printer. I am not at home right now to get the specific steps, but I believe all you do is put your fax stuff in the document feeder (I don't know if you can do this directly from the computer) and enter the 1-800 number from your calling card. Then the calling card will ask for your options and you will hear it from printer. That's what they mean by monitor. Then just follow the prompts.

Will not send outgoing fax

From what your saying, the problem is not on your end, but on the receiving end. The other fax is not answering the call.
