Message appears on digital display 'cassette rec. protected'. It is also set as "Letter" which is not a function we usually use. How do I turn these functions off??
Try another cassette. There is a tab on each side of the back edge of a tape which when removed will prevent most machines from going into record. If the tab is there (and not bent in), then the switch at the back of the cassette compartment is dirty or out of adjustment. If you can find a manual for the 2740 (try at www.nuance.com, they bought Dictaphone), it will show how to change the Letter display back to a timeline. Good Luck.
Hello the Dictaphone 2740 does not have the option for telephone
record or conference recording you need the Model that is really similar to the
2740 the model is 2750 this model has telephone record option and conference
record capable.
Note: for telephone record you need to buy a separate
adaptor like this ECS-DPRC

I found the solution to this problem. It has to do with the dictaphone function to hold a dictation so that nothing else can be recorded on the tape. The way to fix it is to fast forward the tape to the end (or at least the end of the recording) and then hold the erase and rewind buttons at the same time until the entire cassette has been deleted.
