Roughly a month ago, the video function on my camera stopped working. Then two days ago, all of the buttons on the "operation panel" stopped responding to touch (and the beeping sound is gone). If I want to change the flash setting, I can't. If I want to change to the close-up setting, I can't. Nothing responds! I can still take photos, however. Any ideas?
That control board is shot or perhaps the connection to the main board is at fault. Shame but repairing those cameras is very labor intensive and hard to work on. And the parts are not cheap either. I am crazy about my SX 50 but if anything like that happened to me I would just go to ebay and get another one inexpensively. Many repairs on cameras are simply not cost effective.

Your camera has a defective CCD imager. Please return the camera prepaid to Canon in New Jersey, they are replacing the CCD at no charge to the customer. This is a known issue and is resolved by many of the manufacturers using the Sony CCD element in their cameras at no charge. Good Luck my friend. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org

Canon customer support will tell you what exactly what is going on[or not] I suspect a circuit failure- if the camera is out of warranty then a new camera will probably bt the answer.
SOURCE: Busy message keeps flashing...wont upload photos
My camera "busy" sign was flashing when i tried to connect it to my comp to upload photos. I also went to the camera's "menu" setting and went to "communication" and changed the setting. after weeks of not being able to upload photos it worked like a charm!

Try doing a reset in the camera tools somewhere, this fixed a similar problem I had.
