Your laptop is having a problem.
First make sure you can see it charge either on the taskbar where the system time is shown.
Then if you see it charge then you'll that it's charging. If you have a similar laptop or ask a friend to see if the adapter charges the battery if so then your battery needs to be replaced. If the battery loses the charge after being charged then the adapter needs to be replaced. If both the battery and adapter work together then it's time for it be tuned up.
Secondly take out the battery and plug it in so you see if it stays on. It probably will so what you do is take the battery and see on the internet if there's been a recall of laptop batteries for Compaq Armada.
From your description it seems the battery hasn't been charged right, so there maybe something wrong with the battery or laptop. First, do a clean to the your Compaq Armada M700 battery and the connection chip on your laptop, then to see if there is something get better.
