We've had the Sony Trinitron kv35s66 for about 5 or 6 years; manufactured in 1999. Sometimes the picture goes out leaving the screen black, but there is sound. Usually, before going out, the screen picture starts having horizontal lines, the screen picture gets shorter and shorter (the width is fine), and then sometimes it goes to black. There is no red blinking light after it has been on for awhile. Sometimes it comes on just fine. Other times when we turn the tv on, the red light flashes over and over, the screen stays black but we have sound. We always have sound. Sometime the picture will just come on. It may be right away or sometimes it's 10 minutes or longer, or the picture won't come on at all. We have unplugged it from our APC battery backup/surge protector unit and plugged directly into an wall outlet. We have reset the power many times. We can't afford a new TV right now, so we are wondering if this is a quick fix, or will we need to toss this out. No picture, just sound and red blinking problem that goes out and a picture that might come on but with in a few seconds lines apear and the picture gets smaller then goes away but i still have good sound.

The most common problem (I have fixed lots) is the Vertical amplifier has developed a loose connection. It probably just needs resoldering. As things expand it makes and looses connection you picture goes in and out. The vertical chip is a large black chip that gets hot, over time it degrades the solder until a connection is damaged. Most newer sets have a protection circuit that senses the lack of height, and shuts down the picture tube to save it. When the picture dropped to a line on older TVs and left that way too long it would burn a line into the face of the picture tube. You then had to have the picture tube replaced along with the vertical amp. it's kinda like a screensaver for your TV.

I have the same problem for a different model - kv32s40. Is it the same solution?
