If you have a legitimate version of windows, then just mail Microsoft and they will give you another key to try.

The problem is, that there is pirated versions of Windows, which uses the product keys.
Microsoft will be able to help you. Just mail them with your details and problem.

The product key is provided to you by Microsoft and will be on the inside of your vista ultimate edition retail edition plastic box (the one shown in the picture) (Usually this key is 25 characters in length)
or if your operating system was pre-installed (came with your computer) the Product Key will be stuck to your desktop pc case usually on one of the side panels but can be on the rear or top of the computer tower case.

If it is a laptop then the Microsoft certificate of authenticity sticker is found on the underside of the laptop or underneath where the battery is. By removing the battery from the laptop you may find the sticker here.

The activation key is completely different to the product key.
If it is an activation key that is required you will need to complete the following to activate windows.
