You can never have too much security, however there are some firewalls that will not work with hardware firewalls, that includes the all Linksys Routers . Keeping this in mind, some software firewall will continue working after the router is installed. If it does, it shouldn't need to remove it, because it's an extra layer of security. However if there are difficulties using the Internet with the Software firewall after installing the router, try disableing it to see if internet is accessable. If the internet works after disabling the software firewall, then remove the firewall.

Port forward VNC server. Not able to connect vnc viwer from external network.

What VNC product are you using? RealVNC? TightVNC? UltraVNC? The VNC software you installed will have a port# assigned to it by default (probably 5900) which can be configured. Find out what that is and forward that port# to the IP of your VNC "server." That should do it.

(don't fogot about any software firewalls on the VNC "server" machine)

Remote Assistance Firewall Issues

Use Crossloop. Each session is encrypted and doesn't require turning off firewalls in your routers. You will have to give it permission to run in Vista and XP, but it works and I've used it many times.

If this is what you're already using, go to their help page to resolve the problem.

Hope this helps.

When I activate the firewall on SBG900, I cannot access Gmail . .

Hi Geothe5228,

My name is ArmyMason, let me see if I have this straight, you want to know if you need the firewall software turned on in your router, if you have it installed on the computer. If this is the question I would have to say, I would find it safer having two firewalls running than one. Anyways Hardware firewalls are much safer than software firewalls, because it blocks the attacks before they get to the computer. Hope this answers your question. If you need further assistance I would suggest posting this question on a forum.

Thanks,
ArmyMason

Router Firewall

Not entirely. Hardware firewalls (such as the one in your router) will block incoming connection attempts based on the port they're using, the protocol, and a number of other factors (varied between firewall brands). Some are designed to block only popular attacks (DoS, PoD, crackers on port 80, Telnet connect attempts, etc...) while others will block a larger variety of attacks.

Anyways, software firewalls will block almost all incoming Internet traffic (except for the ones defined in the exceptions) along with almost all outgoing Internet traffic. The only way I find this to be useful is if you're trying to keep some private information private, or if you use that computer to determine if some software is trying to phone home (web beacon, trojan, dialer, etc...).

I really don't see the need for Software firewalls unless you're a hard-core web-surfer and don't care what you click on. If you do like the extra security, perhaps one of the better software firewalls is made by ESET.

I prefer ESET to Symantec's Personal Firewall because Symantec's Firewall on one of my older systems was hijacked by a virus a few years back which allowed the virus unprecedented access to the root of my Operating System. The virus gutted the computer without any alerts from Norton CE or the Firewall.

Anyways, I hope this was the answer you were looking for. If not, please feel free to respond with more details on what you were truly asking. All the best. ;-)

Linksys wrt54g router

Hi,
First of all, good questions.
To answer your first question, most linksys routers come with firewalls, but im not positive about this particular one.
Now for youur second one, installing a firewall ill work with linksys, Zonealarm is good, I also reccomend AVG.
Even if the router comes with a firewall, I would install one anyway, to be safe.
Hope this helps, and good luck :)
