Monitor goes to black screen after only a few seconds

This a very common for this model, it was so bad that HP had recalled it years ago. Look for cold solder joints on all 4 round inductor, check all four transistors (c5706/5707), the caps.

Dell flat screen powers on and off

You may have bad fuse, shorted out transistors (c5706/5707), please look here for Dell E series circuits boards: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

I have a problem with a Dell e173fp monitor. On power up, the power LED goes green and screen flashes on once very dimmly, then goes black.

Look for shorted out transistors (4) (c5706/5707) in the inverter circuits, this is common problem, post back what you see so we can guide you further.

Monitor is black and button blinks

First, check the 4 transistors (c5706/5707) in the inverter transformer driving circuits, then also look for bad caps. See example of failed monitors here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
