Hello, The unit is freezeing because you are having a fault when the unit is trying to go into its defrost cycle. Click this link http://c.searspartsdirect.com/lis_png/PLDM/R0303508-00003.png you would have to perform a continuity test on parts 20 and 14 using a multimeter to see which of these two is at fault. Usually it is part 20 which is the defrost thermostat that causes this issue in the unit. If you do test both of these parts and both do have continuity message me back for further diagnosis. Thanks I await your reply and please also remember when our chat has fully concluded to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation it allows me to continue helping others in similar situations in the future. Thanks
Rick

The top two shelves are not freezing and the food on those shelves and that area of the door have defrosted. The bottom seems to be freezing. I can hear the fan running and do not feel any drafts from

Obviously that freezer is not achieved the required temperature. There are several reasons for that:
- Defrosting system is not working, which leads to accumulation too much ice on the evaporator that prevents heat transfer and reduces air circulation despite the fan is running.
- The problem with draining condensate after defrosting cycle which also leads to accumulation of ice.
- Leaking gas from the cooling system (reduced cooling capacity)
- Faulty compressor

Why is the top shelf of whirlpool upright freezer not freezing?

Just had this issue. Freezer is packed usually & suspected airflow. Emptied bottom 2 shelves & vent strip was solid frost. Bottom 2 shelves were filled w/ solid roasts & other solid large items. Used blowdryer & currently waiting to see if it begins freezing top shelf.

Top 3 shelves don't freeze

Cold air sinks. If evaporator temp is not low enough only the items on bottom of freezer will get cold and possibly freeze - stuff on top will not.
Throw a digital thermometer in there towards the top shelves and I bet your temps are high. Low refrigerant will cause this; furthermore, if you leave the refrigerator door open by accident, the refrigerator will never shut off, the freezer evaporator will freeze over with a block of ice, and the freezer temps will be higher. If that is what happened, simply unplug the unit and allow it to self defrost and then turn it back on for proper operation and make sure that the refrigerator door is properly closed!

Kenmore freezer freezes up

By the movie you have an upright freezer. The worst type any body can own. Every time you open the door cold air flows out onto the floor and is replaced by room temp air that is heavy in humidity (water vapour). This freezes into ice and the more you open the door the more ice you will get. Also if the door gaskets(seals) are not perfect you will get the same result.

Top & middle shelves COVERED with frost/ice, not middle

That is normal. The refrigerant runs through those shelves. They are the evaporator side of the unit. That is where the freezing effect comes from.
Check door seals for leaking air.
Keep door openings to a minimum.
Get in there and get out.
Those things will help prolong frost/ice buildup.

Freezer frost

An upright freezer that is not frost free will have the coils in the shelves (shelves are non-removeable) and that is where the frost will buildup.  If your model is like this then it will have to be defrosted periodically.  If your not sure then give me the entire model # from the sticker inside the freezer and I will look it up for you.
