Setting up a WAP54G as a wireless repeater with a WRT54G

How can the WAP54G be set up as a wireless signal repeater with the WRT54G router?

    WRT54G v2.2 vs. WRT54GL v4.30.5

    Hello,

My Linksys router shows that it is a WRT54G v2.2 on the bottom of it, but the inside original firmware indicates that it is a WRT54GL v4.30.5. Which one should I believe and which directions should I follow to convert it to a repeater or bridge?

I flashed the router with dd-wrt.v23_mini_wrt54g, and accessed the web interface using “root” as the user name and “admin” as the password. This process worked fine. Then I flashed the router again, this time with dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic. Now I can’t get into the router. I have tried using with “root” and “admin” in a few different combinations. I want to get in to flash it again with dd-wrt.v24_std_generic for the last time. I think this is what I need to do…

    Thanks-a-ton for your help!

Requirements for WAP54G & WRT54G Repeater Mode function: * WRT54G: Firmware 2.02.2 or higher * WAP54G: Firmware 2.06 or higher Go to http://www.linksys.com/download to download the latest firmware upgrades for both devices. . Accessing the Router?s Setup Page: Open a Web Browser (either Internet Explorer or Netscape). 1. Type the IP Address of the Router into the Address Bar (192.168.1.1 is the default IP Address). 2. Click GO or press the [Enter] key. The User Name and Password prompt will appear. 1. Leave the User Name field blank. 2. Type admin in for the Password (the default Password). 3. Click OK or press the Enter key. The Router?s Setup page will open: * Click on the Status Tab. * Click on the Wireless sub tab. Write down the Wireless MAC Address and the Channel number values located on this page. If the Encryption Function is Disabled, go to the WAP54G Repeater Setup section below. If Encryption Function is Enabled: Note: WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is not yet compatible with wireless repeater mode. You must use WEP Encryption if you wish to use security options with this configuration. To gather WEP encryption information, click on the upper Wireless tab, then the Wireless Security sub tab. Write down the Passphrase. WAP54G Repeater Setup Be sure that you have the WAP54G plugged directly into one of the WRT54G?s numbered ports for the duration of the setup. Accessing the WAP54G?s Setup Page: Open a Web Browser (either Internet Explorer or Netscape). 1. Type the IP Address of the WAP54G into the Address Bar (192.168.1.245 is the default IP address). 2. Click GO or press the Enter key. 3. The User Name and Password prompt will appear. 4. Leave the User Name blank. 5. Type in admin for the Password (the default password). 6. Click OK or press the [Enter] key. The WAP54G?s Setup page will open. 1. Set the Channel value to the same channel as the WRT54G router that was obtained from earlier steps. 2. If WEP encryption was enabled on the WRT54G: * Select Enable for the Wireless Security option. * Click on the Edit Security Settings button and enter the same Passphrase as the one of the WRT54G router that you recorded. Click Generate to populate the WEP key fields. * Click Save Settings to save your changes and close the encryption window. Click Save Settings to save your changes on the Setup page. 3. Next, click on the AP Mode tab. * Select the Wireless Repeater option. * Enter the WIRELESS Mac Address from the WRT54G that you recorded. (Disregard the fact that the page asks to ?Enter the LAN MAC ADDRESS?). Click Save Settings to save your changes. Close your web browser. You can now place the WAP54G Access Point in another nearby location (with its power adapter plugged in) so that it can repeat the wireless signal that it receives from the WRT54G. Notes: * The ?SSID? of the WAP54G does not have to be the same as the WRT54G. This can be used for initial configuration; using a different SSID will enable testing of network connectivity, and will show that the WRT54G is associated with the WAP54G. * If MAC Filtering is configured on the WRT54G, no extra configuration is needed. Wireless clients will still need to be added the MAC Filter list of the WRT54G, but the WAP54G does not have to on the list.

Repeater isn't getting signal

Plug the first router into a LAN port on the router you are using as a repeater. Don't plug into the WAN port. That should make it work

Good day, I want to connect three/four Cisco linksys wireless router wirelessly together in a home network such that: 1. Systems working with each AP can comunicate with those with other AP 2. all of...

Ok, what you really want to do is have one router as an access point and the others all set as repeaters.
You'll want to find some WAP54G for the access point/repeaters
The procedure, I cannot explain better than this article does:
http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&login=1&app=search&vw=1&articleid=4200
it has diagrams and the works on setting those routers into repeater mode.
Post a comment here if you have any issues with that configuration!
NOTE: your configuration should use 2-3 WAP54G with a WRT54G as your main router at the modem.

I can not access the linksys access point, the 192.168.1.245 does not link.

the default address is 192.168.1.1. if you still can't access you can factory default by pressing and holding the reset button on the back for about 10 seconds. after it restarts the ip address will be 192.168.1.1 leave the username blank and the password will be admin.

Just received the WRT54G router and wireless card from a friend...the router works, but I can't get the wireless to work without the original password, however my friend can't remember it. Since i have...

You can reset to default factory settings.
check here for a full list of default password
or follow these instruction:
"f you have forgot the default password of your linksys WRT54G router than remember that the default password for WRT54G is user name = not required /give any
password = admin

and the default access IP of WRT54G is 192.168.1.1"

and here for a configuration tutorial of your device.
Of course resetting values you have to recreate network configuration this tip can help.

Connect wag200g to wap54g wireless

Hi!

I am sorry to say this but the accesspoint WAP54G's capability as a wireless repeater can only be used with a WRT54G, WRT54GS and another WAP54G.

That means it will not work as a wireless repeater for the WAG200G gateway. If you need a wireless repeater, you can use a WRE54G. This is a Linksys wireless repeater and is compatible for all wireless AP's.

If you have any other questions, you can ask me and I'll help you.

WAP54G's as repeaters

Are you trying to setup both access point to repeat the signal of the router?
The correct way to setup the AP's as repeater is to access the setup page of your router go to status and go to the wireless subtab, check what is the MAC address that is what your suppose to configure on the AP's not the LAN MAC address which is on the local networks subtab on status.
Access the setup page of the AP's and go to AP Mode, make sure that you choose the repeater and copy down the Wireless MAC address you obtained from the wireless router. To enable roaming, meaning your wireless computer/device will connect to the AP/router closest to its location, change the wireless channel on all three device for example WRT54G will be on channel 1, 1st AP as repeater on Channel 6 and the last AP to Channel 11 but the other settings must be the same(Wireless name(SSID) and Wireless Security).

Note: Setting up an AP as repeater to repeat or extend the signal of another AP that is set to repeater is not recommended since the signal will deteriorate due to the number of hops the packets will be sent.

Hope this will help you setting up those WAP's which for me is quite useful since you can set it up to act as a repeater, AP client and a bridge to a WRT54G router.

Linksys WAP54G connection to WRT54G

Ok, so why do you need an access point upstairs and a router downstairs connected wirelessly? If you can't connect with a laptop or a pc, why whould you think you could connect the access point? The purpose of this configuration would have to be with the access point to the router via ethernet. What's the point? If the problem is range, check out http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php to enhance the capabilities of the WRT54G... and maybe building a parabolic antenna for it as well. Plans to do so abound at Lifehacker.com.

Getting The WRE54G To Connect With The WRT54G

The WRT54G, WRT54GS, and WAP54G all must have the latest firmware versions available installed in order to connect with the WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander. Here are the minimum firmware version requirements that you must meet: * WRT54G (all versions): at least firmware version 2.02.2 * WRT54GS: at least firmware version 2.07.1 * WAP54G (all versions) : at least firmware version 2.07 To Identify your WAP54G Version Number: To find out which version of the WAP54G you currently have, flip your Access Point over to look at its underside. Near the serial number label, near the Linksys© logo, you will see your model number and a possible version. Labels for the WAP54G version will look like one of the following: * WAP54G (no version means Version 1) * WAP54G ver. 1.1 * WAP54G v. 2 For WAP54G Version 1 and Version 1.1 Users ONLY: (if you have a WAP54G Version 2, you may proceed with the 2.07 or later firmware upgrade) NOTE: Before upgrading the WAP54G Version 1 and Version 1.1 models to firmware version 2.07 or later, make sure your Access Point?s current firmware is version 1.09.1 beforehand. The version 1.09.1 code performs an important OS upgrade for these versions of the Access Point -- it must be loaded before using later firmware.
