Hi,
I have two 12" PG Xenon subs wired at 2 ohms each. I have had my setup for over a year already and have not had problems until today. This morning I turned on my car and noticed that my subs were making a huming noise. I checked all of my wirirng and everything is fine. I turned off the car and I hear a loud thump from the subs. I tested my amp with new RCA's and the sound was still there. I noticed that the sound only comes when I hook up the RCA's to the amp. I have my RCA's seperate from the power cable and my ground is properly connected, so I know this is not the problem. I also noticed that when I turn up the volume I hardly hear any sound coming from the subs, The subs look like they are bumping, but the sound is very low. I tested each sub seprately and I get the sound from both. I don't the think there is anything wrong with the subs. I checked myre wiring on them and everything is properly connected. Can someone please help?
Thaks
This sounds like a problem with the head unit output to the sub amp. Are you using a Pioneer head unit? If so, you may have a problem with some surface mounted fuses inside the radio on the main board. Certain Pioneer head units have a common problem with these fuses blowing. They are fuses for the ground on the RCA outputs.
Let me know if this is the case, and if it is I can give you the part number of these fuses and tell you where they are located, but you would need good soldering skills to replace them. Also let me know what model number your head unit is.
Thanks,
Dave
Just as I suspected, a Pioneer. This is one you really need to send in for service. Since it is only 6 months old it is still under warranty. These also have a common problem that Pioneer will fix for free even if it is not under warranty. The ribbon cable from the display to the main board is faulty and will need to be replaced at some time. Since you have a problem with it now, you really should send it on for service. Contact Pioneer directly so you can find out where to send it to. They do not authorize all the normal warranty service centers to work on them, so it will need to go to a special place designated by Pioneer. You can take it to any authorized Pioneer service center near your home, but they will still need to ship it to Pioneer.
This is a big hassle for you, but this is a very expensive head unit that you should have serviced properly. In the long run it will save you money. They are very difficult to service, taking them apart is a big job in itself.
You have some of the very best car audio equipment that is available, I know you spent a small fortune on your system, with this head unit, a Phoenix Gold Amp and subs, you obviously wanted really high quality equipment. Do yourself a favor and have it serviced by the right people. I am a huge fan of Phoenix Gold and wish I could see and hear your system, I know it must sound incredible when it all is working right.
Here is some contact information for Pioneer, I hope this helps you.

Thanks Tech 48 for your quick response. I have a Pioneer Avic Z3 that is not even 6 months old.
Tech48 thanks again for your help. I will definately send in my unit.
I have a a simmilular issue, I have several amps; 2 batterys, 1 farad capacitor; lots of equipment. I have a rockford P-500 2 channel amp and a Pioneer 760W amp, the RCA go from the head unit (a Pioneer) and through the pass-thru on the Rockford to the pioneer. I have 2 10'' sups at 500 RMS 1000 Peak, and 2 12'' subs at 500 RMS and 1400 Peak. At low volume it sounds good but at about one quarter volume up it seem to all of a suddeny be putting out like half volume, all the speakers more and it does "bump" but before I changed the wiring it would never sound like its clipping, of cut out. I could bounce a quarter off of my car roof. I have one amp's ground and power jumped to another; should I change this? Is their other problems. I have hooked up the head units RCA to both amps by the themselfs, they work fine, but when its ALL hooked up their seems to be some kind of anti-clipping thing going on, im just confused; somone please help!
