Clarke Power Products Inc AC2001 2HP 4 Gallon Pancake Tank Compressor Logo
Anonymous Posted on Aug 22, 2011

I own a Clark AC2001A 2HP/4Gallon compressor (approx. 3 years old) that I use 3-4 times year. I am sure that the oil level has remained at the proper indicated level. Recently, I was going to use it, but when I turned it on, the motor just hummed without actually compressing air, as if the motor or piston was stuck. I quickly turned it off so I wouldn't burn out the motor. I know that this is not a fuse or other circuit problem because other items run fine when plugged into this circuit. Is there something simple that I should try to see if I can get it running, or is a major overhaul the only solution?

Capacitor, check and see if the capacitor is ok

I am the person who originally posted this question. I was not able to contact ClarkeUSA (out of business?). However, I was able to find a capacitor with the same specifications at a local motor repair shop. Although it was not of the same physical size and the connectors required adaptation, I was able to fashion a bracket for the new capacitor and my compressor works again. Thanks to hsmith813; you're awesome!!

Does this unit need a "run" or "start" capacitor? part number?

If it's an oil-less, none. If it's a regular compressor, use compressor oil.

Runs continuously but never gets above 80lbs. Had to replace check valve a couple months ago, but worked great until today. Gr8 for inflating tires, but that's not why I bought it. About 5 years old and...

If your problem is that it never get above the 80 psi pressure, no matter how you adjust the pressure setting.
And the oil level of your compressor is just right. Then, your problem could be the piston rings. Check this up,
it may need replacement.

Craftsman air compressor, oil build up in the air line

worn compressor rings, not a real issue, I assume it is more of a build up over time, say a gram of oil is blown into the lines every year, well one gram would not be noticed nor two but since it soes not evaporate it builds up to the point that you can see it, some oil is blown by brand new compressors and over time gets to be more and more, but as long as you are still getting full pressure you do not have to service the compressor, but since this is being used on water pipes I would install a trap inline to catch the oil
