Hi - our RDR-gx3 powers up and the left hand display works saying "Power Off" But we cannot switch it on or open the disc tray using the open button. Is this a button panel problem, stuck disc problem or perhaps even a child block/lock problem?

This seems to be a fault in the main board as it fails to switch on. It seems that the power does not switch on as the main processor has some errors that sends feedback to stop it from switching on.
The fault can be related to a short in the drive board, the power to the main board. If the connector to the main board is detached then the display must show up. If not you will need some basisc electronics to check the processor and circuits to confirm if there are any errors.
Also remove the power and allow some time for the set to drain voltages, when switching on press down the play button -- check the manual for the resetting pattern to reset the processor if it has hung up.
The front panel button jamming or other issues like the CD being jammed cannot make the power from coming up and then shutting down. So you will need to have the main board checked for fault. This being a complex area it is better to get opinions and estimate before you tamper to damage the board.

The child lock is on. Press the power off until just the time shows in the display. Then press and hold the stop button until the display shows "unlocked". You should be able to open the tray now.

Sony rdr-hx720 tray won't open and says traylocked?

The disc tray does not open and you cannot remove the disc after you press Z (open/close). ,Turn off the recorder. Once the clock appears in the front panel display, disconnect the mains lead. (If the recorder does not turn off or if the clock does not appear in the front panel display, disconnect the mains lead anyway.) Connect the mains lead again while pressing down A on the recorder, and release the button when the disc tray opens. Then, keep [/1 on the recorder pressed for about ten seconds until "WELCOME" appears in the front panel display

When I put in a new a recordable dvd disc in my RDR GX 300 it will format & then it says this picture can not be recorded, even though I have previously recorded the program on my DVR from Directv. I...

Hi,

There are three things you can do that will eventually give you a working solution. Depending on the level of problem. Start with 1 progress to 3 until it works.
1. Use a cleaning disc. (one that use an alcohol based liquid)

2. If the cleaning disc does not solve it, you can use an ear bud, with some iso-propyl alcohol to clean the DVD lens on the drive directly. (you have to open the player and the drive)

3. The guaranteed working solution is to replace the DVD drive inside the player. This is quite a simple process, as most players use a standard IDE DVD-ROM or DVD writer.

You simply remove the face plate, (apply power to the drive, and press eject first) the tray will open. Unclip the tray face, and then with the tray open you can unclip the plastic face plate too.

Remove the old drive, and fit the new drive by reversing the removal procedure.

Once everything is assembled you should be able to watch DVD's again. If you can't find a cheap DVD drive locally, try ebay.

I have done this on over 50 players for my clients in the past. I use LG IDE DVD roms and IDE DVD writers for the DVD recorders, irrespective of brand.

Let me know how it goes.
